Twenty-five years ago, Veterans Park Elementary School students responded with art and their heartfelt reactions to the unimaginable tragedy of the 9/11 attacks.
Guided by their art teacher, Leslie Hudson-Tolles, students from all grades created a banner that remains an inspiration to this day. It’s been displayed at the State Capitol and at Veterans Hospitals and thanks to Ms. Hudson-Tolles and the efforts of the late Kay Ables, it’s now part of the permanent collection of the Ridgefield Historical Society.
Summer interns at the Historical Society researched the banner and spoke to Ms. Hudson-Tolles about how it came to be as they prepared it for a new exhibit.
A portion of the banner is now on display in the lower level of the Ridgefield Town Hall as part of the annual 9/11 remembrance exhibit presented by the Historical Society. Artifacts and publications and tributes to those lost are in the main floor display cases.
