Stories of the Survey
Following the discovery of skeletal remains under a Main Street house in 2019, the Ridgefield Historical Society applied for and received two American Battlefield Protection Program grants from the National Park Service. Those grants provided funds so archaeologists from Heritage Consultants could survey the footprint of the Battle of Ridgefield and forensic scientists could study the remains.
As those two groups worked, the Historical Society was documenting their efforts. Reports on the individual teams, the methods they used, and the breakthroughs they made were regularly published on our website. Those reports, compiled here, provide a fascinating narrative of their daily work and the moments when they made discoveries that have advanced the history of the battle.
