Schoolhouse Season Returns

May brings the return of Schoolhouse Season, when we re-open the doors of the precious Peter Parley Schoolhouse and welcome fresh air and new students of all ages.

The Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse will be a busy place in May as it hosts students from Farmingville Elementary School who are studying colonial history and will get a taste of one-room school education, presented by Dr. Darla Shaw and former Farmingville School teacher B.G. Brown.

Farmingville’s three third grade classes will visit on separate mornings during May to experience how earlier generations of Ridgefielders were educated. These sessions have been planned by Dr. Shaw (bottom center >) and Ms. Brown (center mid, just above Dr. Shaw >), working with Farmingville third grade teacher Rebecca Talcott, who initiated the project.

May also brings the return of First Sundays at the Schoolhouse, a series of open houses at the schoolhouse museum of early education in Ridgefield, where visitors learn about the building and some of its famous graduates as well as about how district schools were organized in Ridgefield.

Opening day will include a special presentation at 2:30 p.m., a short taste of early schooling, presented by Dr. Shaw and Barbara Kaplan. Sundays at the Schoolhouse will take place May 28, June 25, July 30, Aug. 27, Sept. 24, and Oct. 29, from 1 to 4 p.m.

Admission is free; donations are welcomed.
