Ridgefield Historical Society Seeks Garden Volunteers for Historic Properties

A new hands-on volunteer group will help preserve the beauty and character of the outdoor spaces that surround some of Ridgefield’s most distinctive historic and architectural landmarks.

The Ridgefield Historical Society is inviting community members who enjoy gardening, history, architecture, and beautiful outdoor spaces to join a small group of volunteers helping care for the landscapes at the Society’s historic properties.

The Society is seeking volunteers to assist with light seasonal gardening at four remarkable Ridgefield sites: the 1714 David Scott House, the 1756 Peter Parley Schoolhouse, the 1872 Branchville Schoolhouse, and a Bauhaus-inspired late Mid-Century home.

This new volunteer opportunity is designed to be enjoyable, flexible, and social. Volunteers may help with planting, tidying garden beds, and caring for the outdoor spaces that help tell the story of Ridgefield’s architectural and cultural heritage. No formal gardening experience is required, just an interest in plants, historic places, and helping preserve the beauty of these special sites.

Most of the volunteer activity will take place at the Society’s late Mid-Century home, a distinctive modernist site. The property offers volunteers a rare opportunity to help care for a historic landscape connected to Ridgefield’s important modern architectural heritage.

“Gardens and grounds are an essential part of the experience of visiting a historic site,” said Stephen Bartkus, Executive Director of the Ridgefield Historical Society. “This is a wonderful opportunity for people who love gardening, architecture, or local history to spend time in beautiful places, meet others with similar interests, and help us care for four very special properties.”

Those interested in applying to join the garden volunteer group are encouraged to contact the Ridgefield Historical Society at [email protected] or (203) 438-5821.

The Ridgefield Historical Society preserves, interprets, and shares Ridgefield’s historical, cultural, and architectural heritage through its collections, programs, preservation initiatives, and historic properties.
