Stephen entered the Navy in 1943, completed officer’s training school and was assigned to an LSM, landing ship medium, a flat bottomed boat that carried tanks to the Pacific islands. The LSM’s got as close to the islands as they could then the two large doors in front would open and the tanks and their crews would travel down a ramp and onto the beach. Mr. Antkiw, the engineering officer was assigned to deliver tanks and their crews to various islands including Okinawa.
