On Board with Sara Kaplan

An architect and artist with a deep appreciation for Ridgefield’s history shares how her love for the town led to her involvement with the Ridgefield Historical Society.

Can you tell us about your background and what attracted you to the Ridgefield Historical Society?

I am an architect and artist. I became interested in the Historical Society as an extension of my work on the Ridgefield Historical District Commission.

How long have you lived in Ridgefield and what brought you here?

My husband and I moved to Ridgefield five years ago from northern Westchester, where we had lived for 25 years and raised our four children. Like many of you, we were attracted to Ridgefield by both its beauty and its cultural offerings.

What is your area of focus on the Board of Directors at the Historical Society?

My specific portfolio is the development of our architectural archives, but, really, I am interested in everything.

What is your favorite era of history? Is there a particular historical person, event, or topic you’re most interested in?

As a native of Stamford, I have a lifelong interest in the history of New England. This jibes with my overall interest in U.S. history and particularly how America’s beginnings contained the seeds of who and what we are today. As for Ridgefield, I’ve been reading everything I can about its history. It is all well-documented and fascinating. Also, the Renaissance, because: the art!

What other interests do you have?

Art and architecture. Once upon a time I would have also said literature but now I’ll just say: a good book.
