Witness Stones Remembrance Ceremony
The annual Witness Stones Program, Bearing Witness: A Gathering of Remembrance, will take place at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, November 19, 2026, continuing a five-year partnership that gives Ridgefield eighth-grade students the opportunity to uncover and honor the lives of people who were enslaved in the community.

Students have previously researched the lives of enslaved residents of the Historical Society’s Scott House: Quash, Lidia, Peter, Dinah, and Ann. This year, the program is expanding to Ridgebury. Grade 8 social studies students in the Ridgefield Public Schools researched the lives of Dorcas and Phillis, two women enslaved by Captain Timothy Benedict during the mid-to-late 18th century. The project is being presented in partnership with the Ridgefield Public Schools, the Ridgefield Historical Society, The Witness Stones Project, The Meeting House and Ridgefield Congregational Church.
The Witness Stones Installation Ceremony is an invitation-only event, but everyone is invited to watch the program live online. Register here to receive the link to watch the ceremony live:
