SUMMARY:Life in Ridgefield—Before it Was Known as Such
DESCRIPTION:The history of Ridgefield CT is lengthy and fascinating. Before the Gilded Age\, before the American Revolution\, before the first proprietors arrived — before Ridgefield was even known as Ridgefield — this land was occupied by American Indians. This program is presented in honor of November’s National Native American Heritage Month.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis special program\, held in collaboration with the Ridgefield Library and featuring lecturer Drew Shuptar Rayvis\, will focus on those early days — Life in the Eastern Woodlands and Life in the Connecticut Woods from the 1670s to the 1730s. \n\n\n\nDrew will not only speak to us of these times\, he will also demonstrate and represent them. His attire and objects reflect the interconnected relationships between the Dutch\, English\, and Algonkian peoples and represent the adaptation of Native American life to European settlement and trade goods\, including the importance and use of wampum.  \n\n\n\nThis program follows the European settlers inland from the coast and watches as they meet their Native American neighbors during the “wild days” of the Connecticut frontier.  Drew will clarify how their “trade artifacts”  — axes\, a flintlock musket\, metal knives\, blankets\, jewelry (glass beads and earrings)\, clay pipes\, and metal scraps — compared to traditional items made from stone\, bone\, wood\, and shell.  \n\n\n\nThe program also highlights the social\, spiritual\, and economic importance of wampum and its role in relations between the Settlers and Natives. If you are interested in the history and heritage of Ridgefield\, this program is for you. \n\n\n\nThis program is most fitting for those ages 14 and older. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pekatawas Makataweu “Black Corn”) holds a cum laude Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from Western Connecticut State University and a Certificate Degree in Archaeology from Norwalk Community College. A true American of the mid-Atlantic region\, his family includes indigenous Pocomoke heritage\, Pennsylvania Dutch\, Welsh\, Swiss\, English\, Scots-Irish\, Boyko Ukrainian\, and Ashkanazi Jewish. In July 2021 he was elected Northern Cultural Ambassador of the Pocomoke Indian Nation by resolution of its tribal council\, chief and vice chief. He honors all of his ancestors as a practicing living historian and regularly participates in colonial era reenactments\, interpretations\, and public educational events. He has studied the reading of Wampum and works diligently in the research and preservation of the Eastern Woodland languages\, particularly Renape and Mahican. See details below. \nEnjoy the artistry and talent of Silhouette artist Deborah O’Connor as she demonstrates her craft at this annual tradition at the Scott House. Original and irreplaceable\, hand-cut silhouettes make treasured gifts and capture their subjects in the briefest and most precious moments in time.\nA silhouette is a portrait cut freehand from black paper and placed on a light background; they first became popular in the mid-18th Century.\nMs. O’Connor requires only five minutes to capture the profile of a sitter\, whether it’s a calm and composed 10-year-old or a wiggly toddler; she also does pet silhouettes\, generally from photographs. Adults as well as children sit for these classic images. \nThis year\, the Historical Society is offering in-person appointments as well as the option of ordering in advance with a photo (pick-up on Dec. 4 at Scott House). Advance ordering is recommended for pet silhouettes.\nThe cost is $35 ($30 for members) for each silhouette\, mounted on white cardstock. Duplicates are $15. SUMMARY:Town of Ridgefield Special Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Ridgefield’s current Demolition Delay Ordinance\, created in 2019\, requires the Building Department to inform the Historic District Commission and Ridgefield Historical Society when demolition applications are received. If a building or structure was built before 1950\, the ordinance provides for a 30-day period for the two organizations to conduct research on the architectural\, cultural\, or historic significance of the property. Should the Historic District Commission and the Historical Society feel the property possesses any such significance\, they may submit a letter of objection which institutes a 90-day delay period in which they work with the applicant to discuss alternatives to demolition. \n\n\n\nLast year\, an unfortunate and premature demolition prompted the Historic District Commission and Ridgefield Historical Society to revisit the ordinance and propose changes to the Board of Selectman.  The updates include more serious fines and restrictions for unapproved demolitions; signage on the property to inform the public of the intended demolition; and a change to the timeline from “built before 1950” to “50 years or older\,” in order to keep the ordinance consistent through time. \n\n\n\nWhile the ordinance does not necessarily prevent demolitions\, it provides the town an opportunity to encourage the preservation of our historic streetscapes. A public meeting was held on November 16th to discuss the changes to the current ordinance. No objections were posed for any of the proposed changes.  \n\n\n\nResidents will vote on the amended Demolition Delay Ordinance at a Special Town Meeting on December 7 at 7:30 in the lower level conference room at Town Hall.  We encourage all those interested in this topic to join us at the meeting.

SUMMARY:The Return of 'Eccentric Women of Ridgefield'
DESCRIPTION:Following two sold-out November performances at the Ridgefield Theater Barn\, Eccentric Women of Ridgefield will be staged at The Meetinghouse in Ridgefield\, 605 Ridgebury Road\, on Sunday\, Jan. 29\, at 2 p.m. \n\n\n\nFeaturing Sheri Rak as Sarah Bishop\, Charlotte Hampden as Mary Louise Beatrice Olcott\, Benna Strober as Jacqueline Seligmann\, and Emily Vopintesta as Carmela Sabilia\, the play is based on narratives created by Dr. Darla Shaw\, adapted for the stage by Stephen Robbins and directed by Linda Seay. Ridgefield’s poet laureate Barbara Jennes makes a special appearance. \n\n\n\nThe production spotlights Sarah Bishop\, the hermit who lived in a “cave” on West Mountain Road during the period following the Revolutionary War;  Mary Louise Beatrice Olcott\, who took over her father’s palatial estate\, Casagmo\, on Main Street in the early 1900s\, and worked diligently to improve Ridgefield and “helped to advance the cause of suffragists across the nation”; Jacqueline Seligmann\, a French heiress in the 1940s who came to live on Barrack Hill then “fell from grace\,” fame\, and fortune to a life filled with hundreds of cats as her only companions; and Carmela Sabilia\, an immigrant from Italy who came to Georgetown in 1898\, and in the 1920s and 1930s she became known as the Peanut Lady of Branchville Road.  \n\n\n\nThe play is co-presented with the Ridgefield Theater Barn and the Ridgefield Historical Society and will be followed by a talk-back and a reception at Shields Hall. DESCRIPTION:This winter\, the Ridgefield Historical Society is hosting a special exhibition within the Scott House\, including original shingles from this 1714 home\, and featuring hand-drawn designs and drawings from the Scott House’s earliest inhabitants.  \n\n\n\n\nPossibly Adinka designs on shingles\n\n\n\nShingle with drawing of bullseye\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nVivus Daucht d. 1795 age 85\n\n\n\n\nOn Tuesday\, November 15\, 8th Grade Students from East Ridge and Scotts Ridge Middle Schools lead a solemn service at the Ridgefield Historical Society\, honoring the lives of two former Scott House residents\, Lidia and Quash—both enslaved inhabitants of this 1714 David Scott home which originally stood at the corner of Main and Catoonah Streets. The students lead the installation of Witness Stones\, put in place to honor these individuals and the lives they led. The Witness Stones will be placed outside the Scott House and may be visited at any time for years to come. \n\n\n\nThe Scott House is open Tuesday – Thursday from 1:00pm – 5:00pm.

SUMMARY:Battle of Ridgefield Historical Walking Tours
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ridgefield Historical Society as we commemorate the 246th Anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield\, which took place on April 27\, 1777 and was a pivotal engagement in the Revolutionary War—pitting Patriots against Loyalists and awakening local patriotic sentiment in Connecticut. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe tour is produced by the Ridgefield Historical Society under the direction of local luminary Dr. Darla Shaw and is a “living history” event where Revolutionary War characters are brought to life by actors in period costumes\, including Benedict Arnold\, General Tryon\, and Anna Stebbins\, among others who will be stationed at several stops along Main Street\, beginning at the Battle of Ridgefield sign north of Casagmo\, and ending at the Keeler Tavern. \n\n\n\nTwo Tours: 10:30 and 11:00 a.m.\n\n\n\nSorry\, both the 10:30 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. tours are full. \n\n\n\nEach tour lasts approximately one hour\, covers approximately one mile\, and each stop will feature a short\, entertaining\, and informative performance.  \n\n\n\nTours are limited to 20 people each. SUMMARY:COVID-19 Memorial Tree Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Early this May\, the Town of Ridgefield will be dedicating a special tree to the memory of those lost in the Coronavirus pandemic.  The tree\, an ‘Autumn Brilliance’ Amelanchier\, was planted outside the Ridgefield Historical Society in April 2022 and has begun flowering this spring.   \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 Memorial Tree on the day it was planted in April 2022.\n\n\n\nThe ceremony — open to all — will include words and a plaque dedication by Ridgefield First Selectman\, Rudy Marconi\, and Pastor Beth Anderson of St. Andrew’s Church in Ridgefield. Refreshments will follow in the Scott House\, the headquarters of the Ridgefield Historical Society.  The Society continues to collect COVID-19 artifacts and oral histories representing this uncommon time in the history of our town\, and our world.  \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 Memorial Tree was initiated by the Commission on Aging of Ridgefield and was generously donated by Steve Zemo of Ridgefield Apartments. Zemo owns and maintains the ‘pocket park’ in which the tree resides.   \n\n\n\nSometimes referred to as “a tree for all seasons\,’ the Autumn Brilliance Amelanchier flowers in springtime\, produces berries in summer\, displays fiery brilliance in fall\, and captures snow in the winter — a year-round tribute to the many friends and family members who lives were lost to the global pandemic.    \n\n\n\nAll are invited to attend the dedication ceremony\, as well as stop by the park for visits across the seasons.

DESCRIPTION:The Ridgefield Historical Society is participating in the Books on the Common Where’s Waldo extravaganza again this year and we’re looking forward to seeing all participating children.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYou can come find Waldo in our 1714 Scott House (4 Sunset Lane) on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1:00pm – 5:00pm\, or track him down at the Peter Parley Schoolhouse on Sunday\, July 30.    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the uninitiated\, each summer Books on the Common hosts a local Where’s Waldo? search\, arming children with Waldo passports and sending them off to find Waldo in participating businesses and organizations across Ridgefield.  It’s an opportunity to visit familiar businesses\, discover new ones\, and have a lot of fun on the hunt. At the Historical Society\, we’ll be displaying a collection of items to view\, touch\, and operate\, and we’ll be on hand to offer interesting facts\, answer questions\, and share the history of Ridgefield.   \n\n\n\nView the Ridgefield Historical Society 2022 Where’s Waldo gallery here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Waldo Where’s Waldo is the creation of British illustrator\, Martin Handford. Waldo\, aka Wally\, was first hidden\, sought\, and found back in 1987\, coinciding with the publication of Handford’s first book.  Since then\, the Waldo books have been published throughout the world\, and translated into nineteen languages. Waldo’s image may also be found on cereal boxes\, comic strips\, TV shows\, films\, video games and various other items. There is no doubt that Waldo has become a worldwide\, beloved icon bringing joy to “children” of all ages — even if he can’t be found!

Kennedy proclaimed July 4 to be “National Bell Ringing Day” through U.S. Congressional Resolution Number 25\, where all across the nation Americans would ring bells to celebrate freedom and patriotism\, as the founding fathers would have done when the Revolutionary War was won in 1783. Historic sites like the Liberty Bell\, many National Parks\, Pearl Harbor\, and the Alamo have participated in this event\, as well as local historical societies nationwide.  Typically\, bells are rung 13 times\, representing the 13 colonies that fought for freedom and independence in 1776. If you have any photos or objects related to going to school in Ridgefield\, please bring them. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield History Club\, a program of the Historical Society\, will meet regularly throughout the year to discuss the history of Ridgefield and all its villages. All are invited: just bring a love of history and some curiosity. This is a great opportunity to connect with other history enthusiasts and learn something new. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program (it’s not a presentation or lecture) where participants share memories related to a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history. SUMMARY:Ridgefield Historical Society to Honor Legacy at the 2023 Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair
DESCRIPTION:The Ridgefield Historical Society will be an exhibitor at the 91st Cannon Grange Agricultural Fair at 25 Cannon Road in Wilton on Sunday\, Aug. 27\,  10-4. \n\n\n\nThe much-anticipated annual event is the grand finale to summer and is enjoyed by hundreds of children and adults who participate in juried agricultural contests ranging from Culinary Arts to Poultry & Fowl\, to Rabbits\, Sewing & Needlework and many more. Additionally\, dozens of concessionaires will be in attendance.  Admission is $2. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield Grange joined forces with the Cannon Grange inthe 1950s\, uniting two organizations dedicated to preserving the agricultural legacy of Wilton and Ridgefield. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield Historical Society will offer visitors an opportunity to delve into the rich history of Ridgefield and its agricultural heritage through a display of photographs and merchandise\, including a wide selection of Ridgefield history books\, which will be for sale.

DESCRIPTION:With Ridgefield Public Schools officially starting tomorrow\, a visit to the Peter Parley Schoolhouse — and a celebration of Parley’s birthday — is a perfect re-entry to the 2023-2024 academic year.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe afternoon will feature a 2:00pm ‘lesson’ by Dr. Darla Shaw\, portraying Parley’s sister\, Abigail Goodrich Whittlesey – an engaging opportunity to learn more about the man\, the school\, and the times in which they lived.  \n\n\n\nNo registration required.  \n\n\n\nThe Peter Parley Schoolhouse honors the author and alumnus Samuel G. Goodrich (pen name Peter Parley)\, but his siblings\, who studied there as well\, were also accomplished wordsmiths. Abigail Goodrich (later Whittlesey) became one of America’s first female magazine editors and provided information and advice to countless 19th Century families\, while Charles A. Goodrich\, the only one of the three to receive a college education\, was the author of more than two dozen books on history\, geography and religion. We’ll honor Abigail’s legacy with a presentation by Dr. Darla Shaw at Last Sunday at the Schoolhouse on Sunday\, Aug. 27. The school\, formerly the West Lane District School and now a museum of early Ridgefield education\, will be open to visitors from 1 to 4; Dr. Shaw’s presentation will begin at 2.
