SUMMARY:Peter Parley Schoolhouse opens on Sunday\, May 29 from 1 to 4 pm
DESCRIPTION:The Peter Parley Schoolhouse — officially the West Lane School — is open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. on the last Sunday afternoon of each month through October. \n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012. Desks\, typical of the kind that would have been used more than a century ago\, fill the classroom whose walls offer information about Ridgefield’s one-room schools and other aspects of its history. Displays include some of the textbooks young Ridgefield scholars might have used. \n\n\n\nAs was the case when it was in use as a school\, the building does not have running water or sanitary facilities; the outhouse is long gone. \n\n\n\nJack and Sally Sanders\, who help oversee the schoolhouse for the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be on hand to welcome guests and answer questions. \n\n\n\nSundays at the Schoolhouse is supported by Fairfield County Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Visitors to the schoolhouse who are vaccinated will not need to wear masks\, but those who are unvaccinated are asked to don face coverings before entering.

SUMMARY:Let Freedom Ring! 2022
DESCRIPTION:This Fourth of July\, Don’t Hold Back…Rock Your Bells and Let Freedom Ring!\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRidgefield Historical Society leads the town in bell-ringing tradition\n\n\n\nOn this Fourth of July\, Ridgefield will be celebrating Let Freedom Ring\, a long-standing tradition in which local churches\, institutions\, and individuals ring their bells 13 times at 2:00pm to celebrate our freedom and independence. \n\n\n\nThe community wide event is being organized by the Ridgefield Historical Society with the support and encouragement of the Town of Ridgefield and First Selectman Rudy Marconi. Participating institutions include Jesse Lee\, St. Mary\, St. Stephen’s\, Sacred Heart\, Saint Patrick’s in Georgetown\, The Meetinghouse/Ridgebury Congregational Church\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, and Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center. \n\n\n\nWith the Town’s permission\, a  group of patriots will also be congregating on Bailey Avenue to give the old fire bell 13 tolls for independence — a melodic reminder of our liberty and good fortune. \n\n\n\nPlease Listen and Ring Your Bells\n\n\n\nAll those in Ridgefield at 2:00pm on Independence Day are invited to participate. Take a moment to listen to the sound of our freedom; or participate with your own bell; or use our quick and easy audio file\, 13 Tolls for Freedom. \n\n\n\n Typically\, bells are rung 13 times\, representing the 13 colonies that fought for freedom and independence in 1776. \n\n\n\nFor those who want the full experience\n\n\n\nJoin the Ridgefield Historical Society team on Bailey Avenue\, or visit Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center for their Fourth of July Celebration. A reading of the Declaration of Independence will follow the chiming bells — and free museum tours\, games\, watermelon\, and a dunk tank will be on hand to remind us all that liberty is not only precious\, it can also be a lot of fun!  \n\n\n\nFree Popsicles for Those Who Post\n\n\n\nAll those who post videos and photos on Facebook of themselves\, friends\, and family rocking their bells on July 4th earn a free popsicle from the Historical Society’s Scott House (4 Sunset Lane) during open hours in the month of July.  Use the hashtag #LetFreedomRingRidgefield2022.  \n\n\n\nAbout the Tradition\n\n\n\nThe Let Freedom Ring tradition was made official in 1963 when President John F. Kennedy proclaimed July 4 to be “National Bell Ringing Day” through U.S. Congressional Resolution Number 25\, where all across the nation Americans would ring bells to celebrate freedom and patriotism\, as the founding fathers would have done when the Revolutionary War was won in 1783. Historic sites like the Liberty Bell\, many National Parks\, Pearl Harbor\, and the Alamo have participated in this event\, and locally the Norwalk Historical Society has hosted this event in the past. \n\n\n\nTo learn more\, or to join the list of participating organizations\, please contact the Ridgefield Historical Society at info@ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org or 203-438-5821.

SUMMARY:Peter Parley Schoolhouse Open House (Samuel Goodrich's Birthday)
DESCRIPTION:Samuel Goodrich (Peter Parley)\n\n\n\nReviving a Tradition: The Ridgefield Garden Club\, when it restored and cared for the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, made a point of celebrating the school’s namesake’s birthday every August. Peter Parley\, of course\, was Samuel G. Goodrich\, born on Aug. 19\, 1793 in Ridgefield. He received all his formal education at the little schoolhouse and went on to a renowned career as the author of educational books for children. We’ll raise a glass of lemonade to Mr. Goodrich on Sunday at the Schoolhouse\, Aug. 28\, from 1 to 4 p.m. Please join the Ridgefield Historical Society in reviving this tradition. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. SUMMARY:When the French Marched Into Ridgebury: Town Hall Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Note: Town Hall is open to the public Monday through Friday\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn July 1\, 1781\, his birthday\, Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur\, the Comte de Rochambeau and nearly 5\,000 French troops arrived in Ridgebury on their way to join General George Washington in the battle for American independence. The troops camped at two sites in Ridgebury before resuming their journey toward the Hudson River the following day. \n\n\n\nA new exhibit in town hall\, Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route\, highlights Ridgebury’s encounter with French troops\, just four years after the hostile British force under General Tryon had come through the village. \n\n\n\nHistorian George L. Rockwell described the event: \n\n\n\nLet us picture that sight when four thousand eight hundred French troops entered this little village…. Resplendent in their brilliant uniforms\, their cannon glistening in the bright summer sun\, their teams of horses and oxen pulling the artillery and carts\, and most of all their kind interest in the inhabitants — what a cordial welcome was extended to them by the patriots of Ridgebury. And although they spoke a strange tongue\, their manner revealed hearts full of sympathy and affection for our ancestors\, fighting zealously for their liberty. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is accompanied and enhanced by a large-scale diorama\, Ridgebury 1781\, created by former Selectman Josette Williams\, showing the Ridgebury area and the French encampments.

SUMMARY:Amazing Tales features the 'Ridgefield Skeletons'
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 13 @ 7:00 am | Virtual \n\n\n\n\n\nThe podcast Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path features local stories about people\, places and events from throughout the state. The September 14th edition featured Keith Jones\, founding president of the Ridgefield Historical Society\, discussing Benedict Arnold and the Battle of Ridgefield. On October 13\, Amazing Tales will release their episode on “The Ridgefield Skeletons.” \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this episode\, CT State Archeologist Emeritus Nick Bellantoni provides the latest update on the effort to identify the skeletal remains of four persons found in a mass grave in a dirt basement of a historic home in Ridgefield. He discusses how he and his expert support team have arrived at an initial working hypothesis that the four skeletons were likely Patriot soldiers who died in the 1777 Battle of Ridgefield\, although that hypothesis remains to be confirmed. The amazing techniques\, technology and insights that surround this incredible archeological effort will be shared and explained. \n\n\n\nThe episode will be available on Thursday\, October 13\, at Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path.

SUMMARY:Peter Parley Schoolhouse Open House (Early Halloween)
DESCRIPTION:The Peter Parley Schoolhouse — officially the West Lane School — will be open to visitors on Halloween Eve from 1 to 4 p.m. Wear your costume (not mandatory) and stay for a few old-fashioned ghost stories. Delectable treats included too.

SUMMARY:Life in Ridgefield—Before it Was Known as Such
DESCRIPTION:The history of Ridgefield CT is lengthy and fascinating. Before the Gilded Age\, before the American Revolution\, before the first proprietors arrived — before Ridgefield was even known as Ridgefield — this land was occupied by American Indians. This program is presented in honor of November’s National Native American Heritage Month.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis special program\, held in collaboration with the Ridgefield Library and featuring lecturer Drew Shuptar Rayvis\, will focus on those early days — Life in the Eastern Woodlands and Life in the Connecticut Woods from the 1670s to the 1730s. \n\n\n\nDrew will not only speak to us of these times\, he will also demonstrate and represent them. His attire and objects reflect the interconnected relationships between the Dutch\, English\, and Algonkian peoples and represent the adaptation of Native American life to European settlement and trade goods\, including the importance and use of wampum.  \n\n\n\nThis program follows the European settlers inland from the coast and watches as they meet their Native American neighbors during the “wild days” of the Connecticut frontier.  Drew will clarify how their “trade artifacts”  — axes\, a flintlock musket\, metal knives\, blankets\, jewelry (glass beads and earrings)\, clay pipes\, and metal scraps — compared to traditional items made from stone\, bone\, wood\, and shell.  \n\n\n\nThe program also highlights the social\, spiritual\, and economic importance of wampum and its role in relations between the Settlers and Natives. If you are interested in the history and heritage of Ridgefield\, this program is for you. \n\n\n\nThis program is most fitting for those ages 14 and older. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pekatawas Makataweu “Black Corn”) holds a cum laude Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from Western Connecticut State University and a Certificate Degree in Archaeology from Norwalk Community College. A true American of the mid-Atlantic region\, his family includes indigenous Pocomoke heritage\, Pennsylvania Dutch\, Welsh\, Swiss\, English\, Scots-Irish\, Boyko Ukrainian\, and Ashkanazi Jewish. In July 2021 he was elected Northern Cultural Ambassador of the Pocomoke Indian Nation by resolution of its tribal council\, chief and vice chief. He honors all of his ancestors as a practicing living historian and regularly participates in colonial era reenactments\, interpretations\, and public educational events. He has studied the reading of Wampum and works diligently in the research and preservation of the Eastern Woodland languages\, particularly Renape and Mahican. He is also fluent in the many European languages in use in the Colonial Period. \n\n\n\nRegistration for this event is required. Please use the form below or here ››\n\n\n\nReserve your space today!

SUMMARY:Hand-Cut Silhouettes
DESCRIPTION:PLEASE NOTE: All Silhouette Appointments are currently booked. To get a place on the waiting list\, please email or call. Silhouettes may also be created virtually. See details below. \nEnjoy the artistry and talent of Silhouette artist Deborah O’Connor as she demonstrates her craft at this annual tradition at the Scott House. Original and irreplaceable\, hand-cut silhouettes make treasured gifts and capture their subjects in the briefest and most precious moments in time.\nA silhouette is a portrait cut freehand from black paper and placed on a light background; they first became popular in the mid-18th Century.\nMs. O’Connor requires only five minutes to capture the profile of a sitter\, whether it’s a calm and composed 10-year-old or a wiggly toddler; she also does pet silhouettes\, generally from photographs. Adults as well as children sit for these classic images. \nThis year\, the Historical Society is offering in-person appointments as well as the option of ordering in advance with a photo (pick-up on Dec. 4 at Scott House). Advance ordering is recommended for pet silhouettes.\nThe cost is $35 ($30 for members) for each silhouette\, mounted on white cardstock. Duplicates are $15. SUMMARY:Town of Ridgefield Special Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Ridgefield’s current Demolition Delay Ordinance\, created in 2019\, requires the Building Department to inform the Historic District Commission and Ridgefield Historical Society when demolition applications are received. If a building or structure was built before 1950\, the ordinance provides for a 30-day period for the two organizations to conduct research on the architectural\, cultural\, or historic significance of the property. Should the Historic District Commission and the Historical Society feel the property possesses any such significance\, they may submit a letter of objection which institutes a 90-day delay period in which they work with the applicant to discuss alternatives to demolition. \n\n\n\nLast year\, an unfortunate and premature demolition prompted the Historic District Commission and Ridgefield Historical Society to revisit the ordinance and propose changes to the Board of Selectman. The updates include more serious fines and restrictions for unapproved demolitions; signage on the property to inform the public of the intended demolition; and a change to the timeline from “built before 1950” to “50 years or older\,” in order to keep the ordinance consistent through time. \n\n\n\nWhile the ordinance does not necessarily prevent demolitions\, it provides the town an opportunity to encourage the preservation of our historic streetscapes. A public meeting was held on November 16th to discuss the changes to the current ordinance. No objections were posed for any of the proposed changes. \n\n\n\nResidents will vote on the amended Demolition Delay Ordinance at a Special Town Meeting on December 7 at 7:30 in the lower level conference room at Town Hall. We encourage all those interested in this topic to join us at the meeting.

Historically\, men have always been included in Teas and certainly contribute to the company and conversation. If you know a man\, bring him along!  If you are a man\, get a ticket today.   \n\n\n\nWhat to Wear? \n\n\n\nKandie Carle\, the Victorian Lady\, will educate us on the clothing and accessories that reflect the Gilded Age era — from corset to gloves.  Throughout her interactive presentation\, Ms. Carle will relate anecdotes\, dispel myths\, and share insights into the fashion\, lifestyle\, manners\, and etiquette of men\, women\, and children at that time.  Ms. Carle\, a theater director\, performer and teacher for over 30 years\, is a decades-long researcher and student of social history and fashion.  \n\n\n\nFor the rest of us\, we can wear whatever we please. For those who enjoy getting gilded up\, wear gloves and a hat\, carry a fancy fan\, don a bowtie — you’re going to the Lounsbury’s house!    \n\n\n\nWhat’s on the Menu? \n\n\n\nWe will have an assortment of delectable treats\, plus tea of course.    \n\n\n\nPlease direct further questions to info@RidgefieldHistoricalSociety.org.

SUMMARY:COVID-19 Memorial Tree Dedication
DESCRIPTION:Early this May\, the Town of Ridgefield will be dedicating a special tree to the memory of those lost in the Coronavirus pandemic. The tree\, an ‘Autumn Brilliance’ Amelanchier\, was planted outside the Ridgefield Historical Society in April 2022 and has begun flowering this spring. \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 Memorial Tree on the day it was planted in April 2022.\n\n\n\nThe ceremony — open to all — will include words and a plaque dedication by Ridgefield First Selectman\, Rudy Marconi\, and Pastor Beth Anderson of St. Andrew’s Church in Ridgefield. Refreshments will follow in the Scott House\, the headquarters of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The Society continues to collect COVID-19 artifacts and oral histories representing this uncommon time in the history of our town\, and our world. \n\n\n\nThe COVID-19 Memorial Tree was initiated by the Commission on Aging of Ridgefield and was generously donated by Steve Zemo of Ridgefield Apartments. Zemo owns and maintains the ‘pocket park’ in which the tree resides. \n\n\n\nSometimes referred to as “a tree for all seasons\,’ the Autumn Brilliance Amelanchier flowers in springtime\, produces berries in summer\, displays fiery brilliance in fall\, and captures snow in the winter — a year-round tribute to the many friends and family members who lives were lost to the global pandemic. \n\n\n\nAll are invited to attend the dedication ceremony\, as well as stop by the park for visits across the seasons.
