If a building or structure was built before 1950\, the ordinance provides for a 30-day period for the two organizations to conduct research on the architectural\, cultural\, or historic significance of the property. Should the Historic District Commission and the Historical Society feel the property possesses any such significance\, they may submit a letter of objection which institutes a 90-day delay period in which they work with the applicant to discuss alternatives to demolition. \n\n\n\nLast year\, an unfortunate and premature demolition prompted the Historic District Commission and Ridgefield Historical Society to revisit the ordinance and propose changes to the Board of Selectman. The updates include more serious fines and restrictions for unapproved demolitions; signage on the property to inform the public of the intended demolition; and a change to the timeline from “built before 1950” to “50 years or older\,” in order to keep the ordinance consistent through time. \n\n\n\nWhile the ordinance does not necessarily prevent demolitions\, it provides the town an opportunity to encourage the preservation of our historic streetscapes. A public meeting was held on November 16th to discuss the changes to the current ordinance. Before the Gilded Age\, before the American Revolution\, before the first proprietors arrived — before Ridgefield was even known as Ridgefield — this land was occupied by American Indians. This program is presented in honor of November’s National Native American Heritage Month.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis special program\, held in collaboration with the Ridgefield Library and featuring lecturer Drew Shuptar Rayvis\, will focus on those early days — Life in the Eastern Woodlands and Life in the Connecticut Woods from the 1670s to the 1730s. \n\n\n\nDrew will not only speak to us of these times\, he will also demonstrate and represent them. His attire and objects reflect the interconnected relationships between the Dutch\, English\, and Algonkian peoples and represent the adaptation of Native American life to European settlement and trade goods\, including the importance and use of wampum.  \n\n\n\nThis program follows the European settlers inland from the coast and watches as they meet their Native American neighbors during the “wild days” of the Connecticut frontier.  Drew will clarify how their “trade artifacts”  — axes\, a flintlock musket\, metal knives\, blankets\, jewelry (glass beads and earrings)\, clay pipes\, and metal scraps — compared to traditional items made from stone\, bone\, wood\, and shell.  \n\n\n\nThe program also highlights the social\, spiritual\, and economic importance of wampum and its role in relations between the Settlers and Natives. A true American of the mid-Atlantic region\, his family includes indigenous Pocomoke heritage\, Pennsylvania Dutch\, Welsh\, Swiss\, English\, Scots-Irish\, Boyko Ukrainian\, and Ashkanazi Jewish. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012. Desks\, typical of the kind that would have been used more than a century ago\, fill the classroom whose walls offer information about Ridgefield’s one-room schools and other aspects of its history. The troops camped at two sites in Ridgebury before resuming their journey toward the Hudson River the following day. \n\n\n\nA new exhibit in town hall\, Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route\, highlights Ridgebury’s encounter with French troops\, just four years after the hostile British force under General Tryon had come through the village. \n\n\n\nHistorian George L. Rockwell described the event: \n\n\n\nLet us picture that sight when four thousand eight hundred French troops entered this little village…. Resplendent in their brilliant uniforms\, their cannon glistening in the bright summer sun\, their teams of horses and oxen pulling the artillery and carts\, and most of all their kind interest in the inhabitants — what a cordial welcome was extended to them by the patriots of Ridgebury. And although they spoke a strange tongue\, their manner revealed hearts full of sympathy and affection for our ancestors\, fighting zealously for their liberty. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is accompanied and enhanced by a large-scale diorama\, Ridgebury 1781\, created by former Selectman Josette Williams\, showing the Ridgebury area and the French encampments.
