DESCRIPTION:Where’s Waldo\n\n\n\nJuly 2026 is the month for youngsters who enjoy a challenge: Finding the striped-shirted fellow at a variety of Ridgefield locations\, including the Ridgefield Historical Society\, in a program sponsored by Books on the Common at 404 Main Street.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll participants should pick up their passports from Books on the Common in late June; this year\, there are 25 locations where Waldo will be hiding. We at the Ridgefield Historical Society will be participating for the entire month of July on the days we are open\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, from 1-5pm at the Scott House on 4 Sunset Lane and on Sunday\, July 26 from 1-4pm at The Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse on West Lane at South Salem Rd. We’ll have some history-related items to show visitors and stickers for your passports after Waldo is found! \n\n\n\nWe will also have a historical scavenger hunt for children to participate in when they visit the Scott House. \n\n\n\nAt the end of July\, those who have found Waldo in at least 10 places will receive a sticker and a button from Books on the Common; those with 20 will also be entered into a prize drawing on July 31.

DESCRIPTION:Last Sundays at the Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nThe Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse\, now a small museum operated by the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m Sunday\, July 26\, 2026. Admission to the schoolhouse is free\, donations are accepted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring each open house\, guests are invited to tour the one-room school (last used by students in 1915) and learn about how Ridgefield’s district schools were organized and what has become of the structures where 18th\, 19th and some 20th Century Ridgefielders received all of their education. DESCRIPTION:Ringing in a New School Year\n\n\n\nAs part of the Gateway Project\, a Semiquincentennial project to upgrade the three triangles along Route 35 leading to Main Street\, has brought a new roof and chimney facing to the schoolhouse\, and accent lighting to the grounds\, which will undergo further landscaping shortly. \n\n\n\nThe school bell will be ringing on Sunday\, Aug. 30\, at the West Lane District/Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, which will be open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. As Ridgefield students get ready to return to school\, it may be fun to see what school was like centuries ago.  \n\n\n\nTry writing on a slate with a piece of soapstone or look at samples of the books that Peter Parley (Samuel G. Goodrich) wrote for young scholars. Try your hand at an old-fashioned toy or imagine what recess was like back in the days of horses and buggies.  \n\n\n\nA schoolhouse has been on the West Lane site since the mid-18th Century; the last class there was in 1915. Preserved as a small museum of early education by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, the schoolhouse is now maintained by the Ridgefield Historical Society.  \n\n\n\nFor more information\, visit ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org.

DESCRIPTION:Ridgefield History Club: The History of Olmstead Lane\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Sept. 15 Ridgefield History Club meeting will focus on a short stretch of Ridgefield that has held more than its share of Ridgefield history. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOlmstead Lane\, being proposed as a new town Historic District (an added West Lane district is also up for consideration)\, was home to many Olmsteads\, as well as Smiths and other early Ridgefielders\, but it’s also been a place where town officials of the 20th Century made their homes\, and where a man who rescued some of the most renowned artists and writers from the Nazis once lived. It’s also where screen actors enjoyed gardening and a pop star found a refuge for a few years. \n\n\n\nJack Sanders\, town historian and resident of Olmstead Lane for more that 54 years\, will give an illustrated talk about the street he calls home (where the first town historian\, Dick Venus\, also lived for many years) at the 10 a.m. meeting on Tuesday\, Sept. 15\, at the Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. \n\n\n\nRidgefield History Club is an informal gathering where participants are encouraged to take part in the conversation. DESCRIPTION:Main Street Walking Tour with Jack Sanders\n\n\n\nTake a walk through the history of southern Main Street with author and town historian Jack Sanders on Saturday\, Oct. 10 (rain date Oct. 17)\, at 10 a.m. The 90-minute walk will begin and end at Jesse Lee United Methodist Church at 207 Main Street (corner of King Lane and Main Street). He is the author of Ambling Along Old Main Street. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSanders will share stories about the many interesting people who have lived in homes and had businesses on Main Street on a route that will go north as far as St. Stephen’s Church and south as far as the southernmost crosswalk on Main Street. He’ll describe buildings that are no longer standing as well as tell how some have been altered or moved. \n\n\n\nThe group size is limited to 20\, age 12 or older. Historical Society board member Keith Russell will lead an illustrated group discussion\, “Clarence Korker’s The Golden Age of Stonehenge – The 1950s\,” featuring recently digitized photographs of the inn’s celebrated guests\, staff and social life\, including entertainers Judy Garland and Jackie Cooper. \n\n\n\nJudy Garland and husband Sid Luft at the Stonehenge Inn\, Ridgefield\, CT\, c. 1950s. Photo by Clarence “Korky” Korker.\n\n\n\nClarence “Korky” Korker documented Ridgefield from the mid- to late 20th century through thousands of photographs and negatives. After retiring\, he donated his extensive collection to the Ridgefield Historical Society. Russell has been gradually digitizing the images and adding them to the Society’s online archive. The collection ranges from portraits\, weddings and community gatherings to streetscapes\, commercial buildings and celebrities visiting Stonehenge Inn. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society.
