DESCRIPTION:Ridgefield History Club Explores Stonehenge Inn’s Golden Age \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe glamour and excitement of Ridgefield’s famed Stonehenge Inn during the 1950s will be the focus of the Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, Aug. 18\, at 10 a.m. at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. Historical Society board member Keith Russell will lead an illustrated group discussion\, “Clarence Korker’s The Golden Age of Stonehenge – The 1950s\,” featuring recently digitized photographs of the inn’s celebrated guests\, staff and social life\, including entertainers Judy Garland and Jackie Cooper. \n\n\n\nJudy Garland and husband Sid Luft at the Stonehenge Inn\, Ridgefield\, CT\, c. 1950s. Photo by Clarence “Korky” Korker.\n\n\n\nClarence “Korky” Korker documented Ridgefield from the mid- to late 20th century through thousands of photographs and negatives. After retiring\, he donated his extensive collection to the Ridgefield Historical Society. Russell has been gradually digitizing the images and adding them to the Society’s online archive. The collection ranges from portraits\, weddings and community gatherings to streetscapes\, commercial buildings and celebrities visiting Stonehenge Inn. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community storytelling program of the Ridgefield Historical Society. The group meets for an hour on the third Tuesday of every month to explore a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history through shared conversation. \n\n\n\nEach session is recorded and cataloged in the Historical Society’s archive to preserve these stories for future generations. The program is also streamed live on Facebook and uploaded to the Society’s YouTube channel. Everyone is invited—just bring your curiosity and love of history. DESCRIPTION:Last Sundays at the Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nThe Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse\, now a small museum operated by the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be open from 1 to 4 p.m Sunday\, July 26\, 2026. Admission to the schoolhouse is free\, donations are accepted. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring each open house\, guests are invited to tour the one-room school (last used by students in 1915) and learn about how Ridgefield’s district schools were organized and what has become of the structures where 18th\, 19th and some 20th Century Ridgefielders received all of their education. Ridgefield Town Historian Jack Sanders and Historical Society Vice President\, Sally Sanders\, who are the schoolhouse’s stewards\, will be on hand to answer questions. \n\n\n\nAs part of the Gateway Project\, a Semiquincentennial project to upgrade the three triangles along Route 35 leading to Main Street\, has brought a new roof and chimney facing to theschoolhouse\, and accent lighting to the grounds\, which will undergo further landscaping shortly.

DESCRIPTION:Where’s Waldo\n\n\n\nJuly 2026 is the month for youngsters who enjoy a challenge: Finding the striped-shirted fellow at a variety of Ridgefield locations\, including the Ridgefield Historical Society\, in a program sponsored by Books on the Common at 404 Main Street.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll participants should pick up their passports from Books on the Common in late June; this year\, there are 25 locations where Waldo will be hiding. We at the Ridgefield Historical Society will be participating for the entire month of July on the days we are open\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, from 1-5pm at the Scott House on 4 Sunset Lane and on Sunday\, July 26 from 1-4pm at The Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse on West Lane at South Salem Rd. We’ll have some history-related items to show visitors and stickers for your passports after Waldo is found! \n\n\n\nWe will also have a historical scavenger hunt for children to participate in when they visit the Scott House. \n\n\n\nAt the end of July\, those who have found Waldo in at least 10 places will receive a sticker and a button from Books on the Common; those with 20 will also be entered into a prize drawing on July 31.

DESCRIPTION:The Ridgefield Graveyard Restoration Committee\, which is an official town committee will be hosting a graveside “sit in” on June 14 at the Branchville Cemetery on Florida Hill Rd. (just off route102 near route 7).  All records of those buried at this cemetery have been lost!  In an attempt to identify those who are interred there or hold a deed for future burials\, the Ridgefield Graveyard Restoration Committee will be onsite for this gravside “sit in”.  The Ridgefield Historical Society houses records for the committee in our vault located at our headquarters at the Scott House.

DESCRIPTION:Last Sundays at the Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nThe Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse\, now a small museum operated by the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will begin its seasonal open houses on Sunday\, May 31\, from 1 to 4 p.m. Other Sunday open houses will take place June 28\, July 26\, Aug. 30\, Sept. 27 and Oct. 25\, from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission to the schoolhouse is free\, donations are accepted. \n\n\n\nDuring each open house\, guests are invited to tour the one-room school (last used by students in 1915) and learn about how Ridgefield’s district schools were organized and what has become of the structures where 18th\, 19th and some 20th Century Ridgefielders received all of their education. Ridgefield Town Historian Jack Sanders and Historical Society Vice President\, Sally Sanders\, who are the schoolhouse’s stewards\, will be on hand to answer questions. \n\n\n\nAs part of the Gateway Project\, a Semiquincentennial project to upgrade the three trianglesalong Route 35 leading to Main Street\, has brought a new roof and chimney facing to theschoolhouse\, and accent lighting to the grounds\, which will undergo further landscaping shortly.

The program will take place at 10 a.m. on Tuesday\, May 19\, 2026\, at the Scott House\, 4 Sunset Lane. \n\n\n\nTom McManus\, Chair of the Ridgefield Town Tree Committee\, will lead the informal conversation\, which focuses on sharing knowledge of Ridgefield’s past and is broadcast live on the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Facebook page for those who can’t attend in person. \n\n\n\nState Champion Norway Maple at Ridgefield Guild of Artists 1974\n\n\n\nThe discussion will explore the history and significance of some of Ridgefield’s notable and historic trees; the role trees have played in shaping the town’s landscape\, character\, and sense of place; efforts to identify\, protect\, and care for important trees; and the ways trees connect natural history\, community memory\, and historic preservation. Tom will also discuss the work of the Ridgefield Tree Committee and why the stewardship of historic trees remains important today. \n\n\n\nThose with photographs\, documents\, memories\, or stories related to notable trees in Ridgefield are encouraged to bring them for show and tell. \n\n\n\nAll are welcome to this free gathering. This was the only inland engagement of the Revolutionary War fought in Connecticut and we remember the courage of a vastly outnumbered Patriot force led by Generals David Wooster\, Benedict Arnold\, and Gold Selleck Silliman\, who confronted a force of 2\,000 British troops that had burned Danbury. This program is part of the Ridgefield Historical Society’s and Keeler Tavern Museum’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Ridgefield Walking Tour is a “living history” event produced by the Ridgefield Historical Society under the direction of local luminary Dr. Darla Shaw. Revolutionary War characters will be brought to life by actors in period costumes\, including Benedict Arnold\, General Tryon\, and Anna Stebbins\, among others\, who will be stationed at stops along the east side of Main Street\, beginning at the Battle of Ridgefield sign at the Casagmo Condominium Association\, and ending at the British cannonball lodged in the cornerpost of Keeler Tavern Museum. The tour is around one mile long\, approximately an hour in length\, and each stop will feature a short\, entertaining\, and informative performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTours will take place rain or shine and will be capped at 20 people per group. Park at the nearest public lot\, walk to the meeting location on Main Street at the entrance of Casagmo Condominium Association\, and check in no later than 10 minutes before your tour departure time as tours will depart promptly. DESCRIPTION:Discoveries of the Battle of Ridgefield Archaeology Project\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBattle of Ridgefield Archaeological Study Leads to new Understanding of the Action \n\n\n\nIn the year leading up to the American 250th celebration\, a team of archaeologists has found exciting new evidence that adds to the understanding of the Battle of Ridgefield and its place in the history of the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin McBride\, principal investigator for Heritage Consultants LLC\, led the work in this second study sponsored by the Ridgefield Historical Society under a National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program grant. He will talk about the team’s findings on Thursday\, April 23\, at 6:30 p.m. in a free illustrated presentation at the Ridgefield Library\, 472 Main Street. This event is co-sponsored by the Ridgefield Historical Society and the Ridgefield Library and is part of both organizations’ commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. Admission is free\, thanks to the Battlefield Grant\, but registration is required here. \n\n\n\nThe archaeologists who spent time in Ridgefield last spring\, summer and fall were informed by historical research done under the historical society’s 2021 N.P.S. grant and with that documentation they focused on likely areas where artifacts indicating fighting might be found. The many objects the group discovered presented several surprises that appear to change the historical record. \n\n\n\nDr. McBride will explain how his team worked and share the discoveries made in this latest battlefield study. It’s become clear that the Battle of Ridgefield encompassed at least four engagements\, with harassment of the British continuing from Ridgebury right through the center of town to their overnight encampment south of the village. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe formal report by Heritage Consultants LLC will be released later in 2026; it will be available on the Ridgefield Historical Society website.  \n\n\n\nKevin McBride is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut and the former Director of Research at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. He has conducted archaeological and historical research throughout New England\, Block Island\, Baja Mexico\, the Caribbean\, and Portugal. His research interests include Indigenous and Colonial cultural and historical landscapes\, maritime adaptations\, historical archaeology\, underwater archaeology\, and battlefield archaeology. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Museum of Natural History and of the Governor’s Task Force on Indian Affairs. Feb. 1 but because of illness has been postponed to Sun. March 15\, 2026 at 2 pm. \n\n\n\nA family lost\, now found through the collision of serendipity and sheer luck. A prominent foundational Ridgefield family whose revolutionary story has been forgotten for 200 years\, will now be revealed. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSix portraits from the early 19th Century comprise a remarkable art and history mystery\, which began in Ridgefield. Their story will be revealed on Sunday\, March 15\, at 2 p.m. at Lounsbury House at 316 Main St. in Ridgefield\, CT by Melanie Beal Marks\, principal researcher and owner of CT House Histories\, who is a member of the Historic Preservation Committee of the Ridgefield Historical Society. This program\, co-sponsored by Lounsbury House\, is part of the Ridgefield Historical Society’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. \n\n\n\nAs the national Semiquincentennial celebration begins\, it’s fitting to observe that the patriarch of this family\, Benjamin Lynes\, was personally involved in the Revolutionary War\, as a Redding teenager taken captive by British troops and then as an American soldier\, serving at West Point. He was a longtime prominent resident of Ridgebury and is one of 14 Revolutionary War soldiers buried in Ridgebury Cemetery. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe six portraits from the Lynes family will be on loan from a private collector for the afternoon program and this presentation will mark the very first time this collection of portraits has been seen publicly. There will be ample opportunity to see these paintings\, done by at least two different artists (unknown). Come learn about the subjects’ storied lives while living in Ridgefield\, New York City and Norwalk and discover how these portraits landed in the hands of the current owner. \n\n\n\nMelanie Beal Marks\, whose meticulous house histories bring a wealth of documented information to homeowners who engage her\, is also recognized for her knowledge of the itinerant portraitist Ammi Phillips. In 2022\, she helped organize an exhibit of Phillips’ work with the Kent Historical Society. Melanie had been studying Ammi Phillips\, also known as the “Kent Limner\,” for several years\, helping to establish provenance for paintings done nearly 200 years ago. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn Jan 25 Melanie will share the story of how the Lynes portraits came to her attention and how she found the keys to unlocking the mystery of who this group of portraits included. She’ll share the stories of Patriot and patriarch\, Benjamin Lynes’ five children but will focus in on his son\, Samuel\, Samuel’s wife\, and their daughter and her husband. Their portraits will also be on display – as well as that of Benjamin’s wife. DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe Underground Railroad in Ridgefield: A Hidden Piece of Black History Revealed\n\n\n\nRidgefield Town Historian Jack Sanders will be joined on Saturday\, Feb. 21\, 2026 by Ira Joe Fisher for a conversation centered around Sanders’ book\, Uncle Ned’s Mountain\, Three centuries of African Americans — free and enslaved — in a small New England town. Copies of the book will be available for purchase and signing at the program from Books on the Common. The Black History Month event is presented by the Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse in Ridgebury and is part of both organizations’ commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSeveral years ago\, Mr. Sanders discovered and wrote about the existence of a station on the Underground Railroad that had been quietly maintained by Ned and Betsy Armstrong\, who were well-known in the Ridgebury community. As free Blacks raising their family in a small compound off what is now called Ned’s Mountain Road\, the Armstrongs risked the harsh penalties of the Fugitive Slave Acts to provide a temporary haven for those who were fleeing southern enslavement. \n\n\n\nIra Joe Fisher\, an acclaimed broadcaster and Ridgefield Poet Laureate\, is a lively interlocutor\, as he and Mr. Sanders demonstrated in their last Ridgefield Historical Society program together\, a discussion of Mr. Sanders’ book\, Here Lyes Ye Body\, in October at Lounsbury House. \n\n\n\nThe Saturday\, Feb. 21\, conversation (snow date Feb. 28) will take place at 2 p.m. at The Meetinghouse (Ridgebury Congregational Church\, 605 Ridgebury Road)\, a short distance north of where the Armstrongs once lived and a short distance south of where they are buried in Ridgebury Cemetery. The hour-long program will touch on many other aspects of the lives of Black Americans in Ridgefield\, from the earliest days of the town to present day. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nA reception will follow at Shields Hall\, across Ridgebury Road from the church; parking is on that side of the road (some accessible parking is available on Canterbury Lane). Tickets are limited\, nonrefundable\, and $20 per person ($15 for members of the Ridgefield Historical Society and The Meetinghouse) available online here. It is broadcast live on Facebook for those who can’t attend in person. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMany of Ridgefield’s early stone walls were made by farmers clearing the land. Later\, ornate pillars and walls topped by lines of upward pointing stones were constructed as entryways to Ridgefield estates and other properties. These works of stone art were probably constructed by immigrant masons who brought their old-world stonework skills across the Atlantic\, said Ms. Reid.  \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield Historical Society would especially appreciate any information that residents might add to research about these stone works.
