SUMMARY:Peter Parley Schoolhouse opens on Sunday\, May 29 from 1 to 4 pm
DESCRIPTION:The Peter Parley Schoolhouse — officially the West Lane School — is open to visitors from 1 to 4 p.m. on the last Sunday afternoon of each month through October. \n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012. Desks\, typical of the kind that would have been used more than a century ago\, fill the classroom whose walls offer information about Ridgefield’s one-room schools and other aspects of its history. Displays include some of the textbooks young Ridgefield scholars might have used. \n\n\n\nAs was the case when it was in use as a school\, the building does not have running water or sanitary facilities; the outhouse is long gone. \n\n\n\nJack and Sally Sanders\, who help oversee the schoolhouse for the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be on hand to welcome guests and answer questions. \n\n\n\nSundays at the Schoolhouse is supported by Fairfield County Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Visitors to the schoolhouse who are vaccinated will not need to wear masks\, but those who are unvaccinated are asked to don face coverings before entering.

All visitors must check in at the Visitor Center first. DESCRIPTION:Procession beginning on Main Street and proceeding to Olde Town Cemetery \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nView/download Event Map\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe 5th Connecticut Regiment and The Brigade of the American Revolution will conduct a funeral procession and ceremony\, rooted in the traditions of the late 1700s\, for the Revolutionary War soldiers discovered in Ridgefield in 2019. These young men died in battle in 1777 and will receive formal recognition at last. Join the community for a special tribute honoring their lives.  \n\n\n\nRepresentatives from the Continental Army will depart from their camp at Jesse Lee at 11:00am\, joining their British counterparts at Ballard Park. From there\, the troops will form a column for the procession\, proceeding up Main Street with a horse-drawn carriage and period caskets.  The ceremony will begin at approximately 12:00pm in the Olde Town Cemetery.   \n\n\n\nPlease note: There is no parking inside the cemeteries\, Main Street and North Street will be closed to traffic. DESCRIPTION:Battlefield Archeology Day is a drop-in event. Registration is optional to help the Ridgefield Historical Society understand attendance.   \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nView/download Event Map\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen Revolutionary War remains — human skeletons and other artifacts  — were discovered in 2019 near Ridgefield’s Main Street\, a research grant was awarded and the historians and archeologists got to work. Since then\, we’ve learned a lot about the remains and the Battle\, and there’s a lot more still to learn.   Meet the field historians and researchers who’ve been studying the Battle of Ridgefield and see demonstrations of the archeological work they do. Watch soil screening and ground penetrating radar in action and participate in metal detecting on the Scott House property. Maybe we’ll find something great! See the Revolutionary War artifacts that have already been found in Ridgefield\, including an authentic musket ball. Great for all ages. Refreshments for all. \n\n\n\nCome when you can. DESCRIPTION:Concert and Panel Presentation: The Battle of Ridgefield Study: Where we are\, How we got here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here\n\n\n\nView/download Event Map\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield Historical Society will launch the anniversary weekend with a special event featuring a performance by the Ridgefield High School Symphonic Orchestra\, followed by a panel presentation unveiling the most recent Battle of Ridgefield findings\, based on the discovery of Revolutionary War skeletal remains in late 2019 in Ridgefield.  \n\n\n\nThe panel will be moderated by Connecticut State Historian\, Walter Woodward\, and will include current and Emeritus State Archeologists\, Sarah Sportman and Nick Bellantoni; Heritage Consultants experts David Naumec and Kevin McBride; and author and historian\, Keith Jones. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe Program\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRidgefield High School Symphonic Orchestra\n\n\n\nThe orchestra will perform several period pieces including: a Gordon Jacob transcription of English composer William Byrd’s March to the Battell from his Virginal book\, renamed The Earle of Oxforde’s Marche; the first movement of Mozart’s 40th Symphony in G minor composed in 1788\, representing the transition from the Baroque Era to the Classical Era\, which occurred around the time of the Battle of Ridgefield; a brief but delightful String Quartet written by founding father Benjamin Franklin while he was in Paris in 1778; and finally O’er the Hills by American composer Francis Hopkinson\, also written in 1778. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield High School Symphonic Orchestra is an auditioned\, full orchestra that includes winds\, strings\, and percussion.  Formed in 2012 under director Michael McNamara\, the group has become one of the elite ensembles at RHS and the state of Connecticut. \n\n\n\nPanel Presentation: The Battle of Ridgefield Study: Where we are\, How we got here\n\n\n\nModerator: Walter Woodward\, CT State HistorianNick Bellantoni\, Emeritus CT State Archeologist Sarah Sportman\, CT State Archeologist David Naumec and Kevin McBride from Heritage Consultants\, LLCKeith Jones\, historian and author \n\n\n\nThe presentation will feature key learnings from the 2019 discovery of historic remains in Ridgefield\, and how they have altered and impacted what we already know. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis program is presented in partnership with the Ridgefield Library.

DESCRIPTION:Mark Albertson describes why the Founders preferred a Militia System controlled by the governors\, in lieu of a large standing army controlled by the Federal Government. In 1796 George Washington warned about over-bloated militaries as being inauspicious to liberty. This talk will also include why\, from 1780 to March 15\, 1783\, Washington had to put down numerous mutinies and revolts within the Continental Army.

DESCRIPTION:Join David Naumec\, Ph.D\, field director and historian of Heritage Consultants as we share the latest findings on the Battle of Ridgefield and discuss how an archaeological survey can enrich our understanding of what truly happened at this Revolutionary War Engagement.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture is the first public ‘unveiling’ of the new research findings contained in a technical report authored by Heritage Consultants\, outlining what we now know about the Battle of Ridgefield and presenting what further work may reveal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is being hosted by the Ridgefield Historical Society with the collaboration and support of the Ridgefield Library.  \n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter’s Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. David J. Naumec is a Museum Consultant\, Archaeology Field Director at Heritage Consultants\, LLC\, and an Adjunct Professor of History. He earned his BA in Public History Administration at the University of Connecticut\, holds a M.A. in History and Museum Studies from Tufts University\, and completed his doctorate in Race and Ethnicity in Early America at Clark University.  \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Dr. Naumec served as a Historian & Archaeologist at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center\, Mashantucket\, CT\, has recently contributed to several museum exhibitions in the region\, and is the primary investigator for the ongoing 1777 Battle of Ridgefield project. His historical specializations include African American\, Native American\, American Military History and Connecticut History in addition to pre and post-contact archaeology. Dr. Naumec has published on topics regarding Connecticut’s Revolutionary War veterans of color\, American military material culture\, Native Americans in the Civil War and ethnic enclaves in the northeast.

SUMMARY:Webinar: “The Better Angels” with Bob Plumb
DESCRIPTION:Watch the webinar recording here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nHarriet Tubman\, Harriet Beecher Stowe\, Clara Barton\, Julia Ward Howe\, and Sarah Josepha Hale came from backgrounds that ranged from sheer enslavement to New York City’s elite.  Surmounting social and political obstacles\, they emerged before and during the worst crises in American history\, the Civil War. \n\n\n\nIn his presentation\, Plumb traces these five remarkable women’s awakenings to analyze how their experiences shaped their responses to the challenges\, disappointments\, and joys they encountered.  Here is Tubman\, fearless conductor on the Underground Railroad\, alongside Stowe\, the author who awakened the nation to the evils of slavery. Barton led an effort to provide medical supplies for field hospitals\, and Union soldiers sang Howe’s “Battle Hymn of the Republic” on the march.  And\, amid a national catastrophe\, Hale’s campaign to make Thanksgiving a national holiday helped move North and South toward reconciliation. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nAuthor/Presenter’s Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nRobert C. Plumb was born and raised in upstate New York where he received his education from grade school to graduate school.  Between his undergraduate and graduate education\, he served as an officer in the Navy\, initially stationed on a ship in the Atlantic Fleet and later commanded a patrol boat with a crew of six in Vietnam.  Following graduate school\, he worked for General Electric in both U.S. and international markets\, specializing in marketing programs\, and later joined Fannie Mae in Washington\, DC in senior marketing management positions. \n\n\n\nAfter he retired from the corporate world\, Plumb began researching and writing what would become Your Brother in Arms: A Union Soldier’s Odyssey (University of Missouri Press). His second book\, The Better Angels: Five Women Who Changed Civil War America\, was published in March 2020 by the University of Nebraska Press. He has attended the Yale Writers’ Workshops in residence 2014 through 2019. \n\n\n\nPlumb’s writing has been published in the Montgomery County Historical Society’s journal; Hallowed Ground\, the magazine of the American Battlefield Trust; and the Washington Post and the Washington Post Magazine.  \n\n\n\nThis program is co-presented with the Ridgefield Library and Books on the Common where you can purchase The Better Angels: Five Women Who Changed Civil War America either at the bookstore or online.

DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nIf you are coming in person or picking up an order\, please come to the Scott House at 4 Sunset Lane\, Ridgefield\, CT 06877. \n  \n\n\n\nOur annual signature silhouettes event is back just in time for the holidays! \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nEach silhouette is cut entirely freehand\, by eye\, not drawn or traced. All ages and pets are welcome. The sitting time for each subject is just five minutes. \n\n\n\nExtra copies can be cut along with the original silhouette and are offered at one half of the price of the original cut. Each silhouette is cut from black paper and can be mounted on card stock while you wait. \n\n\n\nPreparing Your Subject\n\n\n\nSubjects should dress in attire that you would like to have captured in the silhouette. Details will show\, so include bows\, ribbons\, neckties\, collars\, hats\, suit jackets\, eyeglasses\, etc. \n\n\n\nPricing\n\n\n\n\nEach silhouette subject costs $35 for non-members\, $30 for members.\nYou may order additional copies of a subject for $15 per copy. SUMMARY:Peter Parley Schoolhouse Open House
DESCRIPTION:Since the upcoming Sunday at the Schoolhouse falls on Halloween\, there will be small treats for costumed guests. We hope to see you before you head out for the traditional trick-or-treating. We do ask anyone who’s unvaccinated to wear a protective mask indoors. \n\n\n\nStop by and learn about Ridgefield’s district schools and ask about what sort of tricks were pulled by young pupils back in the days when the school served the neighborhood. \n\n\n\nAt 3 pm\, storyteller Darla Shaw will stop by the Schoolhouse and share a spooky story about the Red Petticoat house on Olmstead Lane. \n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012. Desks\, typical of the kind that would have been used more than a century ago\, fill the classroom whose walls offer information about Ridgefield’s one-room schools and other aspects of its history. Displays include some of the textbooks young Ridgefield scholars might have used. \n\n\n\nAs was the case when it was in use as a school\, the building does not have running water or sanitary facilities; the outhouse is long gone. \n\n\n\nJack and Sally Sanders\, who help oversee the schoolhouse for the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be on hand to welcome guests and answer questions. \n\n\n\nSundays at the Schoolhouse is supported by Fairfield County Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Visitors to the schoolhouse who are vaccinated will not need to wear masks\, but those who are unvaccinated are asked to don face coverings before entering.

SUMMARY:Webinar: War on Long Island Sound during the American Revolution by Ed Hynes
DESCRIPTION:This exciting new webinar reveals the action\, intrigue and terror of the people living around Long Island Sound during America’s War for Independence. With the Connecticut and Long Island coasts less than 10 miles apart in many sections of the Sound\, raiders crossed every fair night either to smuggle and/or steal goods; and kidnap or kill enemies. Spies\, on both sides\, rounded out this dangerous cast of characters. \n\n\n\nThe economic blockade between British occupied Long Island and Patriot led Connecticut was the foundation of this violent conflict. But bitterness and desire for vengeance was fueled by the fighters’ familiarity with one another. Families and communities were ripped apart as Patriots in Connecticut expelled Loyalists and Loyalists on Long Island banished Patriots. Many Connecticut Loyalists ended up on Long Island and many Long Island Patriots became refuges in Connecticut. Rabble-rousers on both coasts knew exactly where their enemies lived and it is not surprising that they started to violently attack each other. \n\n\n\nThe attack vessel of choice was the whaleboat. These boats were powered by up to 10 men and measured about 25 feet in length. Some had a sail and/or a swivel gun on the bow; they were very maneuverable and could operate quietly. These shallow boats were easily hidden in the many inlets and islands of the Sound. \n\n\n\nSome raids were led by “individuals” or loosely organized small groups\, but sophisticated planning was employed for bigger raids involving hundreds of men. The lecture will detail some of these raids and discuss the fate of Patriot prisoners held by the British. \n\n\n\nThis program is co-presented by the Ridgefield Library. 20th Anniversary programming is generously supported by Lead Sponsors Liz & Steven Goldstone\, with additional funding provided by Fairfield County Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nEd Hynes\, CFA\n\n\n\nEd Hynes\, CFA was born and raised in Wilton\, CT.  He attended Wilton High School and currently lives in Norwalk. DESCRIPTION:The Peter Parley Schoolhouse — officially the West Lane School — is open to visitors the last Sunday each month through October. \n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012. Desks\, typical of the kind that would have been used more than a century ago\, fill the classroom whose walls offer information about Ridgefield’s one-room schools and other aspects of its history. Displays include some of the textbooks young Ridgefield scholars might have used. \n\n\n\nAs was the case when it was in use as a school\, the building does not have running water or sanitary facilities; the outhouse is long gone. \n\n\n\nJack and Sally Sanders\, who help oversee the schoolhouse for the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be on hand to welcome guests and answer questions. \n\n\n\nSundays at the Schoolhouse is supported by Fairfield County Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Visitors to the schoolhouse who are vaccinated will not need to wear masks\, but those who are unvaccinated are asked to don face coverings before entering.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: IN MEMORIAM\, 9/11 at Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Hours at Town Hall are M – F\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm; please verify in case they change. \n\n\n\nMarking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks\, the Ridgefield Historical Society display cases on the main level at Town Hall are filled with documents\, artifacts (including a small piece of the steel from one of the towers) and remembrances of those lost on Sept. 11\, 2001. The exhibit will continue through October.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe town’s annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will take place Saturday\, Sept. 11\, at 6:30 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial at 195 Danbury Road.
