DESCRIPTION:With Ridgefield Public Schools officially starting tomorrow\, a visit to the Peter Parley Schoolhouse — and a celebration of Parley’s birthday — is a perfect re-entry to the 2023-2024 academic year.   \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe afternoon will feature a 2:00pm ‘lesson’ by Dr. Darla Shaw\, portraying Parley’s sister\, Abigail Goodrich Whittlesey – an engaging opportunity to learn more about the man\, the school\, and the times in which they lived.  \n\n\n\nNo registration required.  \n\n\n\nThe Peter Parley Schoolhouse honors the author and alumnus Samuel G. Goodrich (pen name Peter Parley)\, but his siblings\, who studied there as well\, were also accomplished wordsmiths. Abigail Goodrich (later Whittlesey) became one of America’s first female magazine editors and provided information and advice to countless 19th Century families\, while Charles A. Goodrich\, the only one of the three to receive a college education\, was the author of more than two dozen books on history\, geography and religion. We’ll honor Abigail’s legacy with a presentation by Dr. Darla Shaw at Last Sunday at the Schoolhouse on Sunday\, Aug. 27. The school\, formerly the West Lane District School and now a museum of early Ridgefield education\, will be open to visitors from 1 to 4; Dr. Shaw’s presentation will begin at 2.

DESCRIPTION:The Peter Parley Schoolhouse — officially the West Lane School — will be open to visitors on Halloween Eve from 1 to 4 p.m.  Wear your costume (not mandatory) and stay for a few old-fashioned ghost stories.  Delectable treats included too.   \n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012. Desks\, typical of the kind that would have been used more than a century ago\, fill the classroom whose walls offer information about Ridgefield’s one-room schools and other aspects of its history. Displays include some of the textbooks young Ridgefield scholars might have used. \n\n\n\nAs was the case when it was in use as a school\, the building does not have running water or sanitary facilities; the outhouse is long gone. \n\n\n\nJack and Sally Sanders\, who help oversee the schoolhouse for the Ridgefield Historical Society\, will be on hand to welcome guests and answer questions. \n\n\n\nSundays at the Schoolhouse is supported by Fairfield County Bank. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nNote: Visitors to the schoolhouse who are vaccinated will not need to wear masks\, but those who are unvaccinated are asked to don face coverings before entering.

DESCRIPTION:Samuel Goodrich (Peter Parley)\n\n\n\nReviving a Tradition: The Ridgefield Garden Club\, when it restored and cared for the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, made a point of celebrating the school’s namesake’s birthday every August. Peter Parley\, of course\, was Samuel G. Goodrich\, born on Aug. 19\, 1793 in Ridgefield. He received all his formal education at the little schoolhouse and went on to a renowned career as the author of educational books for children. DESCRIPTION:Since the upcoming Sunday at the Schoolhouse falls on Halloween\, there will be small treats for costumed guests. We hope to see you before you head out for the traditional trick-or-treating. We do ask anyone who’s unvaccinated to wear a protective mask indoors. \n\n\n\nStop by and learn about Ridgefield’s district schools and ask about what sort of tricks were pulled by young pupils back in the days when the school served the neighborhood. \n\n\n\nAt 3 pm\, storyteller Darla Shaw will stop by the Schoolhouse and share a spooky story about the Red Petticoat house on Olmstead Lane. \n\n\n\nThe West Lane School\, a.k.a. Peter Parley Schoolhouse\n\n\n\nOriginally built in the mid-18th Century\, the schoolhouse for the West Lane district was replaced with the larger current building in the early 19th Century. Its informal name\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, pays tribute to Samuel G. Goodrich\, who attended the school from 1799 to 1803 and later wrote a series of popular textbooks for children under the pen name\, Peter Parley. \n\n\n\nThe school served students of the district until 1915\, when it was closed and its children were transferred to the new and modern East Ridge School. \n\n\n\nStill owned by the Town of Ridgefield\, the schoolhouse at the intersection of West Lane\, South Salem and Silver Spring Roads was restored and maintained as a small museum by the Ridgefield Garden Club\, which transferred the responsibility for it to the Ridgefield Historical Society in 2012.
