DESCRIPTION:Where’s Waldo\n\n\n\nJuly 2026 is the month for youngsters who enjoy a challenge: Finding the striped-shirted fellow at a variety of Ridgefield locations\, including the Ridgefield Historical Society\, in a program sponsored by Books on the Common at 404 Main Street.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAll participants should pick up their passports from Books on the Common in late June; this year\, there are 25 locations where Waldo will be hiding. We at the Ridgefield Historical Society will be participating for the entire month of July on the days we are open\, Tuesday\, Wednesday\, and Thursday\, from 1-5pm at the Scott House on 4 Sunset Lane and on Sunday\, July 26 from 1-4pm at The Peter Parley/West Lane District Schoolhouse on West Lane at South Salem Rd. We’ll have some history-related items to show visitors and stickers for your passports after Waldo is found! \n\n\n\nWe will also have a historical scavenger hunt for children to participate in when they visit the Scott House. \n\n\n\nAt the end of July\, those who have found Waldo in at least 10 places will receive a sticker and a button from Books on the Common; those with 20 will also be entered into a prize drawing on July 31.

SUMMARY:History Club: Photographing Ridgefield with Clarence Korker
DESCRIPTION:Photographing Ridgefield with Clarence Korker will be the topic for the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Ridgefield History Club on Tuesday\, November 21\, 2023 at 10am in the historic David Scott House at 4 Sunset Lane. Jack Sanders\, who has written 10 books on Ridgefield history\, will be on hand. Parking at the Scott House is limited and carpooling is recommended. Come to share memories or just to listen. Seating is limited at the Scott House\, so we ask that you register in advance. \n\n\n\nClarence “Korky” Korker\, the longtime photographer of Ridgefield people and places\, and the former owner of the Ridgefield Photo Shop snapped thousands of photographs during his forty-year career in the mid-1900s\, which are the now are part of the Ridgefield Historical Society’s collection and currently being digitized. This informal discussion will be devoted to looking at Korker’s streetscapes\, sharing stories\, and reminiscing about how Ridgefield has changed over the years. \n\n\n\nWere you ever photographed by Korky? If you have any photos or objects related to this topic\, please bring them with you for show and tell! \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield History Club\, a program of the Historical Society\, meets regularly throughout the year to discuss the history of Ridgefield and all its villages. All are invited: just bring your love of history and your curiosity. This is a great opportunity to connect with other history enthusiasts and learn something new about our wonderful town. \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield History Club is an informal community story telling program (it’s not a presentation or lecture) where everyone sits in a circle and shares memories related to a specific topic in Ridgefield’s history. SUMMARY:Tellabration: Your Part in Historical Ridgefield
DESCRIPTION:Tellabration is a storytelling festival that was started by Paw Paw Pinkerton in Connecticut in 1988 and has since spread worldwide. We’ll celebrate with some town tales at the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Scott House at 4 Sunset Lane on the traditional Saturday before Thanksgiving\, Nov. 18\, 2023 at 3:30pm. The goal of this gathering is to help bring joy\, friendship\, and reminders of common humanity to listeners and tellers. Parking at the Scott House is limited so please register in advance here or call 203-438-5821. \n\n\n\nThe five-minute true stories are based on a theme. Here\, in 2023\, it’s “Your Part in Historical Ridgefield\,” organized by Dr. Darla Shaw\, who will be one of the storytellers. \n\n\n\nDr. Shaw will be the afternoon’s M.C. and start the stories with a history of Tellabration in Ridgefield. DESCRIPTION:The Ridgefield Historical Society is participating in the Books on the Common Where’s Waldo extravaganza again this year and we’re looking forward to seeing all participating children.  \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nYou can come find Waldo in our 1714 Scott House (4 Sunset Lane) on Tuesdays through Thursdays from 1:00pm – 5:00pm\, or track him down at the Peter Parley Schoolhouse on Sunday\, July 30.    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFor the uninitiated\, each summer Books on the Common hosts a local Where’s Waldo? search\, arming children with Waldo passports and sending them off to find Waldo in participating businesses and organizations across Ridgefield.  It’s an opportunity to visit familiar businesses\, discover new ones\, and have a lot of fun on the hunt. At the Historical Society\, we’ll be displaying a collection of items to view\, touch\, and operate\, and we’ll be on hand to offer interesting facts\, answer questions\, and share the history of Ridgefield.   \n\n\n\nView the Ridgefield Historical Society 2022 Where’s Waldo gallery here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Waldo Where’s Waldo is the creation of British illustrator\, Martin Handford. Waldo\, aka Wally\, was first hidden\, sought\, and found back in 1987\, coinciding with the publication of Handford’s first book.  Since then\, the Waldo books have been published throughout the world\, and translated into nineteen languages. Waldo’s image may also be found on cereal boxes\, comic strips\, TV shows\, films\, video games and various other items. There is no doubt that Waldo has become a worldwide\, beloved icon bringing joy to “children” of all ages — even if he can’t be found!

SUMMARY:Life in Ridgefield—Before it Was Known as Such
DESCRIPTION:The history of Ridgefield CT is lengthy and fascinating. Before the Gilded Age\, before the American Revolution\, before the first proprietors arrived — before Ridgefield was even known as Ridgefield — this land was occupied by American Indians. This program is presented in honor of November’s National Native American Heritage Month.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis special program\, held in collaboration with the Ridgefield Library and featuring lecturer Drew Shuptar Rayvis\, will focus on those early days — Life in the Eastern Woodlands and Life in the Connecticut Woods from the 1670s to the 1730s. \n\n\n\nDrew will not only speak to us of these times\, he will also demonstrate and represent them. His attire and objects reflect the interconnected relationships between the Dutch\, English\, and Algonkian peoples and represent the adaptation of Native American life to European settlement and trade goods\, including the importance and use of wampum.  \n\n\n\nThis program follows the European settlers inland from the coast and watches as they meet their Native American neighbors during the “wild days” of the Connecticut frontier.  Drew will clarify how their “trade artifacts”  — axes\, a flintlock musket\, metal knives\, blankets\, jewelry (glass beads and earrings)\, clay pipes\, and metal scraps — compared to traditional items made from stone\, bone\, wood\, and shell.  \n\n\n\nThe program also highlights the social\, spiritual\, and economic importance of wampum and its role in relations between the Settlers and Natives. If you are interested in the history and heritage of Ridgefield\, this program is for you. \n\n\n\nThis program is most fitting for those ages 14 and older. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDrew Shuptar-Rayvis (Pekatawas Makataweu “Black Corn”) holds a cum laude Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and Sociology from Western Connecticut State University and a Certificate Degree in Archaeology from Norwalk Community College. A true American of the mid-Atlantic region\, his family includes indigenous Pocomoke heritage\, Pennsylvania Dutch\, Welsh\, Swiss\, English\, Scots-Irish\, Boyko Ukrainian\, and Ashkanazi Jewish. In July 2021 he was elected Northern Cultural Ambassador of the Pocomoke Indian Nation by resolution of its tribal council\, chief and vice chief. He honors all of his ancestors as a practicing living historian and regularly participates in colonial era reenactments\, interpretations\, and public educational events. He has studied the reading of Wampum and works diligently in the research and preservation of the Eastern Woodland languages\, particularly Renape and Mahican. DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, October 13 @ 7:00 am | Virtual \n\n\n\n\n\nThe podcast Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path features local stories about people\, places and events from throughout the state.  The September 14th edition featured Keith Jones\, founding president of the Ridgefield Historical Society\, discussing Benedict Arnold and the Battle of Ridgefield.   On October 13\, Amazing Tales will release their episode on “The Ridgefield Skeletons.”   \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nIn this episode\, CT State Archeologist Emeritus Nick Bellantoni provides the latest update on the effort to identify the skeletal remains of four persons found in a mass grave in a dirt basement of a historic home in Ridgefield. He discusses how he and his expert support team have arrived at an initial working hypothesis that the four skeletons were likely Patriot soldiers who died in the 1777 Battle of Ridgefield\, although that hypothesis remains to be confirmed. The amazing techniques\, technology and insights that surround this incredible archeological effort will be shared and explained.  \n\n\n\nThe episode will be available on Thursday\, October 13\, at Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path.

SUMMARY:When the French Marched Into Ridgebury: Town Hall Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Note: Town Hall is open to the public Monday through Friday\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn July 1\, 1781\, his birthday\, Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur\, the Comte de Rochambeau and nearly 5\,000 French troops arrived in Ridgebury on their way to join General George Washington in the battle for American independence. The troops camped at two sites in Ridgebury before resuming their journey toward the Hudson River the following day. \n\n\n\nA new exhibit in town hall\, Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route\, highlights Ridgebury’s encounter with French troops\, just four years after the hostile British force under General Tryon had come through the village. \n\n\n\nHistorian George L. Rockwell described the event:  \n\n\n\nLet us picture that sight when four thousand eight hundred French troops entered this little village…. Resplendent in their brilliant uniforms\, their cannon glistening in the bright summer sun\, their teams of horses and oxen pulling the artillery and carts\, and most of all their kind interest in the inhabitants — what a cordial welcome was extended to them by the patriots of Ridgebury. And although they spoke a strange tongue\, their manner revealed hearts full of sympathy and affection for our ancestors\, fighting zealously for their liberty. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is accompanied and enhanced by a large-scale diorama\, Ridgebury 1781\, created by former Selectman Josette Williams\, showing the Ridgebury area and the French encampments.

DESCRIPTION:This Fourth of July\, Don’t Hold Back…Rock Your Bells and Let Freedom Ring!\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nRidgefield Historical Society leads the town in bell-ringing tradition\n\n\n\nOn this Fourth of July\, Ridgefield will be celebrating Let Freedom Ring\, a long-standing tradition in which local churches\, institutions\, and individuals ring their bells 13 times at 2:00pm to celebrate our freedom and independence. \n\n\n\nThe community wide event is being organized by the Ridgefield Historical Society with the support and encouragement of the Town of Ridgefield and First Selectman Rudy Marconi. Participating institutions include Jesse Lee\, St. Mary\, St. Stephen’s\, Sacred Heart\, Saint Patrick’s in Georgetown\, The Meetinghouse/Ridgebury Congregational Church\, the Peter Parley Schoolhouse\, and Keeler Tavern Museum & History Center.  \n\n\n\nWith the Town’s permission\, a  group of patriots will also be congregating on Bailey Avenue to give the old fire bell 13 tolls for independence — a melodic reminder of our liberty and good fortune. \n\n\n\nPlease Listen and Ring Your Bells\n\n\n\nAll those in Ridgefield at 2:00pm on Independence Day are invited to participate. Kennedy proclaimed July 4 to be “National Bell Ringing Day” through U.S. Congressional Resolution Number 25\, where all across the nation Americans would ring bells to celebrate freedom and patriotism\, as the founding fathers would have done when the Revolutionary War was won in 1783. SUMMARY:Battle of Ridgefield Funeral Procession and Ceremonial Salute
DESCRIPTION:Procession beginning on Main Street and proceeding to Olde Town Cemetery \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nView/download Event Map\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nThe 5th Connecticut Regiment and The Brigade of the American Revolution will conduct a funeral procession and ceremony\, rooted in the traditions of the late 1700s\, for the Revolutionary War soldiers discovered in Ridgefield in 2019. These young men died in battle in 1777 and will receive formal recognition at last. Join the community for a special tribute honoring their lives.  \n\n\n\nRepresentatives from the Continental Army will depart from their camp at Jesse Lee at 11:00am\, joining their British counterparts at Ballard Park. From there\, the troops will form a column for the procession\, proceeding up Main Street with a horse-drawn carriage and period caskets.  The ceremony will begin at approximately 12:00pm in the Olde Town Cemetery.   \n\n\n\nPlease note: There is no parking inside the cemeteries\, Main Street and North Street will be closed to traffic. DESCRIPTION:Mark Albertson describes why the Founders preferred a Militia System controlled by the governors\, in lieu of a large standing army controlled by the Federal Government. In 1796 George Washington warned about over-bloated militaries as being inauspicious to liberty. This talk will also include why\, from 1780 to March 15\, 1783\, Washington had to put down numerous mutinies and revolts within the Continental Army.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Reconstructing the April 27\, 1777 Battle of Ridgefield
DESCRIPTION:Join David Naumec\, Ph.D\, field director and historian of Heritage Consultants as we share the latest findings on the Battle of Ridgefield and discuss how an archaeological survey can enrich our understanding of what truly happened at this Revolutionary War Engagement.  \n\n\n\nThis lecture is the first public ‘unveiling’ of the new research findings contained in a technical report authored by Heritage Consultants\, outlining what we now know about the Battle of Ridgefield and presenting what further work may reveal. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis event is being hosted by the Ridgefield Historical Society with the collaboration and support of the Ridgefield Library.  \n\n\n\n\nRSVP Here\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nPresenter’s Bio\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. David J. Naumec is a Museum Consultant\, Archaeology Field Director at Heritage Consultants\, LLC\, and an Adjunct Professor of History. He earned his BA in Public History Administration at the University of Connecticut\, holds a M.A. in History and Museum Studies from Tufts University\, and completed his doctorate in Race and Ethnicity in Early America at Clark University.  \n\n\n\nIn recent years\, Dr. Naumec served as a Historian & Archaeologist at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center\, Mashantucket\, CT\, has recently contributed to several museum exhibitions in the region\, and is the primary investigator for the ongoing 1777 Battle of Ridgefield project. His historical specializations include African American\, Native American\, American Military History and Connecticut History in addition to pre and post-contact archaeology. Dr. Naumec has published on topics regarding Connecticut’s Revolutionary War veterans of color\, American military material culture\, Native Americans in the Civil War and ethnic enclaves in the northeast.

SUMMARY:Picturing Our Past: In-Gallery and Online Exhibition
DESCRIPTION:In honor of our 20th Anniversary\, the Historical Society has partnered with the Ridgefield Guild of Artists for this history-inspired exhibition featuring works of art inspired by items from the Historical Society’s collections. \n\n\n\nThere will be an Opening Reception on Sunday\, March 13 from 4-6 pm (Original date 3/12 was postponed because of weather.)  \n\n\n\nA special Walk & Talk event — and RHS Member Reception — will be held on Sunday\, March 20th\, from 2-4 pm. \n\n\n\nFor more information\, please visit the Ridgefield Guild of Artists’ exhibition page.

SUMMARY:Exhibit: IN MEMORIAM\, 9/11 at Town Hall
DESCRIPTION:Hours at Town Hall are M – F\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm; please verify in case they change. \n\n\n\nMarking the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks\, the Ridgefield Historical Society display cases on the main level at Town Hall are filled with documents\, artifacts (including a small piece of the steel from one of the towers) and remembrances of those lost on Sept. 11\, 2001. The exhibit will continue through October.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe town’s annual 9/11 Memorial Ceremony will take place Saturday\, Sept. 11\, at 6:30 p.m. at the 9/11 Memorial at 195 Danbury Road.
