SUMMARY:The Remembrance Ball
DESCRIPTION:The Remembrance Ball\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAs our nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence\, the Cannon Ridge Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is honored to extend an invitation to a commemorative evening in Ridgefield\, Connecticut. \n\n\n\nOn Saturday\, April 25\, 2026\, the Cannon Ridge Chapter will host the Remembrance Ball at the historic Lounsbury House. This black-tie gala commemorates our Nation’s Semiquincentennial\, pays tribute to those who fought for American independence\, and respectfully honors all sacrifices made at the Battle of Ridgefield.  We will also be hosting a parade and wreath laying ceremony that afternoon attended by the Governor’s Horse Guards.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGold’s Dragoons of Westport will also be joining us to pay tribute to the great-grandson of their founder and fellow Gold’s Dragoon\, Patriot Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Gould of Fairfield\, who was killed in action as he led his men during some of the fiercest fighting of the Battle of Ridgefield. In addition\, the Ridgefield Historical Society will share a preview of its forthcoming Battle of Ridgefield documentary about exciting archaeological discoveries made during the Society’s National Park Service-supported research. This dramatic new film will bring to light fresh insight that advances the historical record of the 1777 battle. Keith Marshall Jones III\, author and the definitive voice of the Battle of Ridgefield\, will serve as the Master of Ceremonies.  \n\n\n\nThe evening will feature an exceptional dinner prepared by Chef Forrest Pasternack\, trained at the Culinary Institute of America. The menu will be rooted in the revolutionary era and inspired by the storied hospitality of George and Martha Washington. Thereafter\, guests will be invited to dance\, and to participate in a charitable bidding\, reflecting the long-held tradition of society assembling in fellowship and service to the common good.   \n\n\n\nComplete event details and ticket information may be found here:  TheRemembranceBall.fundraiser.support \n\n\n\nAdditional information regarding the service of Lieutenant Colonel Abraham Gould\, sponsorship opportunities\, program advertisements including memorials to Patriots\, clans and organizations\, charitable contributions\, and general practicalities is available on the gala website. \n\n\n\nProceeds from the Remembrance Ball will remain local to Connecticut and New York and will support the Cannon Ridge Chapter’s charitable initiatives in education\, patriotism—particularly service to veterans and their families—and historic preservation. \n\n\n\nWe would be delighted by the pleasure of your company and hope you will join us for this meaningful occasion. \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Battle of Ridgefield Walking Tours

This was the only inland engagement of the Revolutionary War fought in Connecticut and we remember the courage of a vastly outnumbered Patriot force led by Generals David Wooster\, Benedict Arnold\, and Gold Selleck Silliman\, who confronted a force of 2\,000 British troops that had burned Danbury. This program is part of the Ridgefield Historical Society’s and Keeler Tavern Museum’s commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. \n\n\n\nThe Battle of Ridgefield Walking Tour is a “living history” event produced by the Ridgefield Historical Society under the direction of local luminary Dr. Darla Shaw. Revolutionary War characters will be brought to life by actors in period costumes\, including Benedict Arnold\, General Tryon\, and Anna Stebbins\, among others\, who will be stationed at stops along the east side of Main Street\, beginning at the Battle of Ridgefield sign at the Casagmo Condominium Association\, and ending at the British cannonball lodged in the cornerpost of Keeler Tavern Museum. The tour is around one mile long\, approximately an hour in length\, and each stop will feature a short\, entertaining\, and informative performance. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTours will take place rain or shine and will be capped at 20 people per group. Park at the nearest public lot\, walk to the meeting location on Main Street at the entrance of Casagmo Condominium Association\, and check in no later than 10 minutes before your tour departure time as tours will depart promptly. If you’re late or miss your tour\, we unfortunately won’t be able to add you to another tour. \n\n\n\nTickets are limited\, nonrefundable\, and are expected to sell out quickly as they do every year: $25 per person for general admission and discounted at $20 per person for Ridgefield Historical Society members (members should enter discount code 5OFF at checkout). Registration is not required. Tours begin at the front door of the museum\, where visitors will view the cannonball fired by British soldiers as they attacked T. Keeler’s Inn during the Battle of Ridgefield – still lodged in the cornerpost of the building\, almost 250 years later!   \n\n\n\nIn KTM&HC’s “War at Home” tours\, visitors will go beyond the battlefield to learn about the experiences of the residents of our site during the Battle of Ridgefield. SUMMARY:Discoveries of the Battle of Ridgefield Archaeology Project
DESCRIPTION:Discoveries of the Battle of Ridgefield Archaeology Project\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBattle of Ridgefield Archaeological Study Leads to new Understanding of the Action \n\n\n\nIn the year leading up to the American 250th celebration\, a team of archaeologists has found exciting new evidence that adds to the understanding of the Battle of Ridgefield and its place in the history of the United States. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Kevin McBride\, principal investigator for Heritage Consultants LLC\, led the work in this second study sponsored by the Ridgefield Historical Society under a National Park Service American Battlefield Protection Program grant. He will talk about the team’s findings on Thursday\, April 23\, at 6:30 p.m. in a free illustrated presentation at the Ridgefield Library\, 472 Main Street. This event is co-sponsored by the Ridgefield Historical Society and the Ridgefield Library and is part of both organizations’ commemoration of the 250th anniversary of America in 2026. Admission is free\, thanks to the Battlefield Grant\, but registration is required here. \n\n\n\nThe archaeologists who spent time in Ridgefield last spring\, summer and fall were informed by historical research done under the historical society’s 2021 N.P.S. grant and with that documentation they focused on likely areas where artifacts indicating fighting might be found. The many objects the group discovered presented several surprises that appear to change the historical record. \n\n\n\nDr. McBride will explain how his team worked and share the discoveries made in this latest battlefield study. It’s become clear that the Battle of Ridgefield encompassed at least four engagements\, with harassment of the British continuing from Ridgebury right through the center of town to their overnight encampment south of the village. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThe formal report by Heritage Consultants LLC will be released later in 2026; it will be available on the Ridgefield Historical Society website.  \n\n\n\nKevin McBride is an Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Connecticut and the former Director of Research at the Mashantucket Pequot Museum and Research Center. He has conducted archaeological and historical research throughout New England\, Block Island\, Baja Mexico\, the Caribbean\, and Portugal. His research interests include Indigenous and Colonial cultural and historical landscapes\, maritime adaptations\, historical archaeology\, underwater archaeology\, and battlefield archaeology. He is a former member of the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Museum of Natural History and of the Governor’s Task Force on Indian Affairs. He has written numerous articles on Native American and Colonial archaeology\, ethnohistory\, archaeobotany\, underwater archaeology\, and battlefield archaeology. \n\n\n\nContact 203-438-5821 or info@ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org for more information. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nGet Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Benedict Arnold: Connecticut’s Most Misunderstood Traitor
DESCRIPTION:Get Tickets\n\n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, November 13\, 2025\, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.\, the Ridgefield Historical Society will host Mike Allen\, former journalist and producer of the podcast Amazing Tales About History\, who will present an illustrated talk\, “Benedict Arnold: Connecticut’s Most Misunderstood Traitor\,” at St. Stephen’s Church North Hall\, 353 Main Street\, Ridgefield\, CT. \n\n\n\nWhile Benedict Arnold is known locally as a hero of the Battle of Ridgefield\, Allen will explore Arnold’s life\, battlefield achievements\, and ultimate betrayal\, including a detailed look at his attempt to hand over West Point to the British. \n\n\n\nTickets are limited and non-refundable: $15 for Ridgefield Historical Society members and $20 for those who are not yet members. Tickets are available online at https://www.zeffy.com/en-US/ticketing/benedict-arnold-connecticuts-most-misunderstood-traitor \n\n\n\nTo become a member of the Ridgefield Historical Society to enjoy discounted admission and other benefits\, go to: https://ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org/support-us/membership/ \n\n\n\nBenedict Arnold’s name is synonymous with being a traitor. At an important point in the Revolutionary War\, he orchestrated the handover of top-secret plans about the Patriots’ most important fort\, West Point\, to British spy John Andre. The plot unraveled; otherwise\, the outcome of the fight for independence may have had a different ending. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nWhen looking at reasons for his traitorous behavior\, his shattered dreams growing up in Norwich are often overlooked. Following the rapid\, consecutive deaths of three children\, and a sharp downturn in his business\, Benedict Arnold’s father turned to alcohol. His dependence led to the collapse of his business and the ruination of the family’s finances. The family thus had to abandon plans to send Benedict to Yale. Their social status collapsed. The teenager endured public ridicule when he had to routinely retrieve his inebriated father at taverns and from the local jail after his arrests for public drunkenness. All of this left young Arnold bitter and feeling somewhat cheated as well as under-appreciated in life\, despite his considerable talents. \n\n\n\nBefore he switched allegiances and joined the British\, Arnold was considered among the finest of all military leaders on the Patriot side – a reputation that was well earned on several battlefields\, including in Ridgefield. He was highly admired and trusted by George Washington. His brave exploits\, though\, left him virtually unable to walk\, having been badly wounded twice in the same leg. Despite his success and sacrifices\, promotions and honor eluded him. The impatient Arnold never seemed to see his own shortcomings in the art of diplomacy as playing a role in his situation. Criticism of his administrative leadership in Philadelphia led to a reprimand from Washington\, an action that ultimately drove him to seek prestige\, a higher rank\, and more money fighting for the British. \n\n\n\nMike Allen uses his background in journalism\, radio broadcasting\, podcasting and public speaking to bring history to life. He has hosted and produced the weekly podcast Amazing Tales About History since 2021\, where he interviews experts on a variety of historical topics. Mike’s journalism career includes documentary production at NPR’s Boston affiliate WBUR as well as being news director at Connecticut radio station  i-95 FM (WRKI-FM). He’s also been published in The New York Times. Mike served as Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury\, and\, during a subsequent\, 25-year corporate career\, he worked\, lived\, and traveled internationally\, specializing in marketing\, communications\, and public speaking. Mike has lived in Connecticut for more than 50 years and currently resides in Danbury. \n\n\n\nFor more information contact the Ridgefield Historical Society at info@ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org or 203-438-5821\, or view ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org. \n\n\n\nPainting: Benedict Arnold by Thomas Hart – From the Anne S. SUMMARY:Unearthing Answers to Battle of Ridgefield Mysteries
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\nOn Thursday\, April 24 from 6:30 to 7:30pm Dr. David Naumec\, an archaeologist and historian with Heritage Consultants\, will give an illustrated presentation\, Unearthing Answers to the Battle of Ridgefield Mysteries: Using Hi-Tech Archaeology to Reveal our History\, about the Ridgefield Historical Society’s Battle of Ridgefield Archaeology Project\, at St. Stephen’s Church North Hall\, at 353 Main Street in Ridgefield\, CT. Admission is free\, thanks to an American Battlefield Protection Program Grant\, but seating is limited\, and registration is required. The presentation will also be livestreamed\, with the link provided upon registration. Please register online here. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 2021\, with the support of a generous National Park Service (NPS) American Battlefield Protection Program Grant\, the Ridgefield Historical Society enlisted Heritage Consultants to research the boundaries of the Battle of Ridgefield\, and to recommend goals for future archaeological work. Building on that survey\, another NPS grant has been secured by the Ridgefield Historical Society to solve the mysteries highlighted by the first investigation. Over the next two years\, hi-tech archaeological methods will be applied throughout Ridgefield to unearth answers to the questions that still puzzle local historians. This lively presentation will describe key findings and unveil the goals of the upcoming second survey. It will also explain the fascinating technology that Heritage Consultants will be using – and how you can participate in this unique effort to reveal our history! Ridgefield property owners interested in participating in this exciting archaeological study are encouraged to attend this presentation to meet Dr. Naumec\, learn more about the process\, and sign up to participate. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. David Naumec is a Historian\, Archaeologist\, and Museum Consultant. He is an Archaeology Field Director for Heritage Consultants and is Historic New England’s Revolution 250 Research Scholar\, studying New England’s indigenous and African American Revolutionary War veterans. Dr. Naumec is a graduate of UConn\, holds a Master’s Degree in History & Museum Studies from Tufts University\, and a PhD in Race & Ethnicity in Early America through the Civil War from Clark University. His interests include Native American history\, colonial North America\, the history of Connecticut\, and Battlefield Archaeology. Dr. Naumec was a member of the Heritage Consultants team that studied the Battle of Ridgefield from 2021-2022\, and was a consultant for historian Keith Marshall Jones’s latest book “The Battle of Ridgefield: Benedict Arnold\, the Patriot Militia and the Surprising 1777 Battle that Galvanized Revolutionary Connecticut.” \n\n\n\nFor more information contact: info@ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org or 203-438-5821 or view ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:Burial Sites from the American Revolution
DESCRIPTION:Register Here\n\n\n\n\nJoin the Ridgefield Historical Society on Saturday\, March 29\, 2025\, for a special meetup at the Friends of the Office of State Archaeology (FOSA) Annual Meeting\, where leading researchers will present on Burial Sites from the American Revolution. Connecticut State Archaeologist Sarah Sportman will discuss the 2019 discovery of adult male burials in Ridgefield\, believed to be casualties of the Battle of Ridgefield. Wade P. Catts and Jennifer Janofsky will explore the Red Bank Battlefield Archaeology Project\, where a mass burial site of Hessian soldiers from the 1777 attack on Fort Mercer was uncovered. Lisa Anderson from the New York State Museum will examine the impact of smallpox on Revolutionary War soldiers\, focusing on unmarked graves discovered in 2019 at Fort George in Lake George\, NY. A Q&A session will follow the presentations. \n\n\n\nAttendees should plan to drive to Farmington High School independently and meet Ridgefield Historical Society staff in the school lobby at 2:15 p.m. to check in and secure seating. Please allow approximately one hour and fifteen minutes for travel from Ridgefield\, depending on traffic. Excavations by the State Archaeologist yielded remains of adult males\, four of whom were hastily buried together in a common shallow grave within the Battle of Ridgefield (April 27\, 1777) battlefield. Recovered buttons dated the remains to the last quarter of the 18th-century. The working hypothesis is that these men were victims of the battle. This presentation provides a brief overview of the discovery\, and an update on the analysis of the burial site skeletal remains and material culture. \n\n\n\nPlease note: The study of the Ridgefield skeletal remains is still in progress\, and no new findings will be shared during this presentation. \n\n\n\n3:00-3:30pm \n\n\n\n“NAKED AND TORN BY THE GRAPESHOT”: THE RED BANK BATTLEFIELD ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT                                                                                                                             \n\n\n\nWade P. Catts\, President\, South River Heritage Consulting and Jennifer Janofsky Prof. of Public History\, Rowan University    \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDuring the summer of 2022\, a mass burial space was discovered at Red Bank Battlefield Park in Gloucester County\, New Jersey. The burial is believed to contain remains of Hessian soldiers who died during the October 22\, 1777 attack on Fort Mercer. This presentation summarizes the histories of the battle and of Battlefield Park\, as well as the archaeological fieldwork and forensic research. The multi-disciplinary project team’s work is continuing\, and we will highlight some of the team’s analyses. \n\n\n\n3:30-4:00pm \n\n\n\n“SMALLPOX IN OUR NORTHERN ARMY CARRIES WITH IT MUCH GREATER DREAD THAN OUR ENEMIES”: THE QUEBEC CAMPAIGN & COURTLAND STREET BURYING GROUND    \n\n\n\nLisa Anderson\, Curator of Bioarchaeology\, New York State Museum \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nIn 1776\, Governor Jonathan Trumbull wrote about smallpox plaguing troops returning from a failed campaign to invade Quebec. The army established a general hospital at Fort George to isolate the sick. In 2019\, unmarked graves believed to be associated with the general hospital were disturbed by construction in the Village of Lake George\, NY. A major salvage effort recovered the fragmentary and scattered remains of over 40 individuals. Subsequent work has focused on reconstructing and interpreting the lives of soldiers and plans to honor them in 2026. \n\n\n\n4:00-4:30pm                                                                                                                                            Q&A \n\n\n\n\nRegister Here

SUMMARY:How the Battle of Ridgefield Impacted the Revolutionary War
DESCRIPTION:How the Battle of Ridgefield Impacted the Revolutionary War\nCreator of the ‘Amazing Tales’ Podcast will Speak here April 24\nThis program is sold out. Thank you for your support! Please continue to register and you will be added to the waitlist. \nOn Wednesday\, April 24\, at 6:30 p.m.\, the Ridgefield Historical Society is pleased to present Mike Allen\, the creator of the podcast Amazing Tales from Off and On Connecticut’s Beaten Path (amazingtalesct.com)\, who will give the illustrated presentation\, “How the Battle of Ridgefield Impacted the Revolutionary War”\, at St. Stephen’s Church North Hall\, 353 Main Street. A reception will follow the lecture. Tickets\, which are limited and nonrefundable\, are $15 for Members of the Ridgefield Historical Society and $20 for Non-Members. \nMike Allen has built his podcasting career on his curiosity about the history of his home state. And since he lives now in Danbury\, the British invasion in 1777 has been of great interest\, from the landing of General William Tryon and his troops at Compo Beach\, to the sacking of Danbury\, to the Battle of Ridgefield. Allen explains\, “In 1777\, during the early years of the Revolutionary War\, the British made their first foray into inland Connecticut. Their mission was to eliminate the Patriot supply depot at Danbury. On their way back to their waiting ships off Compo Beach at Long Island Sound\, they encountered fierce and unexpected resistance during the Battle of Ridgefield. In this presentation\, you’ll hear how Ridgefield came to play its significant role that Sunday and why it had an impact on British strategy going forward.” \nNoted storyteller Mike Allen specializes in bringing local history to life\, through his background in journalism\, radio broadcasting\, podcasting and public speaking. His podcast on Connecticut history is a project he began in retirement and it’s become a full-time enterprise. For 10 years\, Mike was News Director at radio station i-95 FM in Brookfield before becoming Press Secretary to the Mayor of Danbury. He subsequently spent 25 years working\, living\, and traveling internationally in a corporate career in which he specialized in communications and marketing. \nThank you to Cross Private Client Insurance for providing the boxed water for this event! \n \nFor more information\, email info@ridgefieldhistoricalsociety.org or call 203-438-5821.

SUMMARY:God Save Benedict Arnold - Talk\, Book Signing and Reception with Jack Kelly
DESCRIPTION:The Ridgefield Historical Society is delighted to announce a talk\, book signing\, and reception at 6:30pm on Wednesday\, December 6\, 2023 with author Jack Kelly\, following the December publication of his new work\, God Save Benedict Arnold\, The True Story of America’s Most Hated Man. His presentation will take place at St. Stephen’s Church North Hall at 353 Main Street in Ridgefield\, CT. Tickets for the program are $15 for members of the Ridgefield Historical Society and $20 for non-members and can be purchased online here. Tickets are nonrefundable. To inquire about your membership status call 203-438-5821 or email info@ridgfieldhistroricalsociety.org. To become a member of the Ridgefield Historical Society join here. Books on the Common will have books for sale and signing at the event. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSay “Benedict Arnold” and the average person would say “traitor.” Students of Ridgefield history\, while acknowledging his later treachery\, would also call him a hero of the 1777 Battle of Ridgefield where he rallied the Continental troops and local militias against a huge British force. While General Arnold\, General David Wooster\, and General Gold Selleck Silliman and their men couldn’t defeat General Tryon’s troops\, they did demonstrate that invasions like the raid on Danbury were not without cost to the invaders. \n\n\n\nSo esteemed was General Arnold here — he fought bravely at the barricade\, had his horse shot out from under him\, and suffered a leg injury — that for the 200th anniversary of the Battle of Ridgefield the Town of Ridgefield commissioned a medal honoring him. (It was reissued in 2002 for the 225th.) \n\n\n\nGod Save Benedict Arnold\, published by St. Martin’s Press\, explores Arnold’s life and military career\, both his efforts for the Patriot cause in the early years of the Revolutionary War and how he came to turn traitor. Kevin J. Weddle\, Ph.D.\, Colonel (Ret.) U.S. Army\, Professor of Military Theory and Strategy\, U.S. Army War College\, calls the book “Wonderfully written\, Jack Kelly’s fresh and lively new study of one of America’s greatest combat commanders is an important contribution to our understanding of this complicated and influential leader.” \n\n\n\nThe Ridgefield Historical Society appearance will be followed by a book tour that includes a Dec. 7 talk at The American Revolution Institute of the Society of the Cincinnati\, Inc.\, in Washington\, D.C. \n\n\n\nJack Kelly is an award-winning author and historian; he lives in the Hudson Valley. His books include Band of Giants: The Amateur Soldiers Who Won America’s Independence\, which won the DAR History Medal; Valcour; The Edge of Anarchy; Heaven’s Ditch\, and Gunpowder. He has also published five novels.

SUMMARY:When the French Marched Into Ridgebury: Town Hall Exhibit
DESCRIPTION:Note: Town Hall is open to the public Monday through Friday\, 8:30 am – 4:30 pm. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nOn July 1\, 1781\, his birthday\, Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur\, the Comte de Rochambeau and nearly 5\,000 French troops arrived in Ridgebury on their way to join General George Washington in the battle for American independence. The troops camped at two sites in Ridgebury before resuming their journey toward the Hudson River the following day. \n\n\n\nA new exhibit in town hall\, Washington-Rochambeau Revolutionary Route\, highlights Ridgebury’s encounter with French troops\, just four years after the hostile British force under General Tryon had come through the village. \n\n\n\nHistorian George L. Rockwell described the event: \n\n\n\nLet us picture that sight when four thousand eight hundred French troops entered this little village…. Resplendent in their brilliant uniforms\, their cannon glistening in the bright summer sun\, their teams of horses and oxen pulling the artillery and carts\, and most of all their kind interest in the inhabitants — what a cordial welcome was extended to them by the patriots of Ridgebury. And although they spoke a strange tongue\, their manner revealed hearts full of sympathy and affection for our ancestors\, fighting zealously for their liberty. \n\n\n\nThe exhibit is accompanied and enhanced by a large-scale diorama\, Ridgebury 1781\, created by former Selectman Josette Williams\, showing the Ridgebury area and the French encampments.

SUMMARY:Battlefield Archaeology Day: Digging for History

Since then\, we’ve learned a lot about the remains and the Battle\, and there’s a lot more still to learn. Meet the field historians and researchers who’ve been studying the Battle of Ridgefield and see demonstrations of the archeological work they do. Watch soil screening and ground penetrating radar in action and participate in metal detecting on the Scott House property. Maybe we’ll find something great! See the Revolutionary War artifacts that have already been found in Ridgefield\, including an authentic musket ball. Great for all ages. Refreshments for all. \n\n\n\nCome when you can. SUMMARY:Lecture: A Well-Regulated Militia with Mark Albertson
DESCRIPTION:Mark Albertson describes why the Founders preferred a Militia System controlled by the governors\, in lieu of a large standing army controlled by the Federal Government. In 1796 George Washington warned about over-bloated militaries as being inauspicious to liberty. This talk will also include why\, from 1780 to March 15\, 1783\, Washington had to put down numerous mutinies and revolts within the Continental Army.
