This survey was conducted by the Ridgefield Preservation Trust in 1979 under a grant from the Connecticut Preservation Office with matching funds from the town of Ridgefield. Its purpose was to identify and catalog sites and structures as a tool for wide-ranging preservation action in the community. This survey has been updated at various times since it was completed in 1979.
Factors other than architecture which were evaluated in determining the historic importance of buildings in the survey included social history, military history, and historic ownership by notable residents in the community.
